Brief Description

The

Safety Specialist

supports the development and implementation of the Corporate Safety and Health Management Plan for generation facilities. This role ensures a safe and healthy work environment through employee education, facility inspections, and compliance with regulatory standards. Additionally, the position provides support for plant physical security activities.

Merom Generating Station is a 2-Unit, 1080-MW rated coal-fired power plant.

Reports To:

Team Leader, Generation Safety & Security

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

- Develop and implement plant and corporate safety policies and procedures to promote safe work practices.

- Maintain knowledge of OSHA and IOSHA regulations; conduct regular plant safety inspections.

- Coordinate emergency response teams, drills, and training; prepare annual drill calendars and budgets.

- Liaise with local fire departments to ensure familiarity with plant systems and emergency protocols.

- Oversee housekeeping policies and supervise labor service personnel to maintain safe plant conditions.

- Investigate accidents and recommend corrective actions to eliminate unsafe practices or conditions.

- Manage inventory of PPE, first aid supplies, and safety equipment; ensure timely completion of safety work orders.

- Serve as a resource for plant management and employees on safety programs and loss prevention.

- Maintain compliance and exchange information with regulatory agencies and insurance representatives.

- Other duties as assigned.


Requirements

Education:

- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.

- Thorough knowledge of OSHA, IOSHA, and standards from ANSI, NFPA, ASTM, NESC, and NEC.


Experience

- Minimum 6 years in safety or loss control, preferably in power generation or heavy industry.


Skills & Abilities

- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact at all organizational levels.

- Ability to manage multiple projects and adapt to changing environments.

- Proficiency in industrial hygiene monitoring instruments and computer systems.

- Must obtain First Aid Instructor certification.

- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver safety training programs.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described below represent those necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this role. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.

All plant employees are expected to work safely at all times. Working at the power plant may involve:

- Exposure to varied outdoor environments, including extreme weather conditions, high noise levels, hazardous areas, and diverse work surfaces.

- Frequent use of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high-voltage protective gear.

- Working near high-voltage equipment and operating heavy machinery, with proper training and safety protocols.

- Entry into confined spaces and potentially hazardous environments, often accompanied by exposure to loud machinery and equipment.

- Physical activities including walking, standing for extended periods, crawling, stooping, sitting, climbing vertical and inclined ladders/stairs, operating large valves, and performing tasks requiring up to 50 lbs. of pulling, turning, lifting, or carrying.

- Exposure to extreme heat and cold.

- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for operating switches, pushbuttons, and other controls.

- Visual acuity requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

- Participation in a post-offer physical examination and drug screening, as well as ongoing random drug testing.

- Compliance with strict smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Summary

Applicants must possess a

valid driver's license

and maintain a clean driving record, as this position requires occasional travel for company business. Candidates should be comfortable operating a vehicle as part of their job responsibilities and must meet any applicable company and insurance requirements.
