The Quality Engineer is responsible for supporting and promoting a culture of quality and continuous improvement within the organization. This role involves proactively identifying opportunities for process and product improvements, implementing corrective and preventive actions, and contributing to the development and maintenance of quality systems. In this role you will require effective problem-solving skills, a solutions-oriented mindset, and the ability to work collaboratively within cross-functional teams. The Quality Engineer must be adaptable in fast-paced environments and committed to maintaining high standards of quality through data-driven decision-making and teamwork.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties and responsibilities of the Quality Engineer are detailed below, but not limited to the following:
Automotive
•Support and lead activities related to automotive quality standards.
•Prepare and submit PPAP packages per customer-specific requirements.
•Maintain APQP documentation: Control Plans, PFMEAs, Process Flows, Inspection Instructions, and SOPs.
•Lead or participate in customer complaint investigations using 8D and other problem-solving tools (5 Why’s, Fishbone, etc.).
•Conduct GR&R and capability studies as required.
•Act as a key quality contact for assigned automotive and non-automotive customers.
•Train internal teams on quality tools and customer-specific requirements.
Extrusion
•Strong knowledge of GD&T fundamentals and principles
•Monitor quality in aluminum extrusion operations and apply best practices to ensure dimensional and visual conformity.
•Drive Process improvement with a focus on increased quality
•Analyze production quality data and recommend process improvements.
•Provide input in the design and validation of extrusion-specific fixtures and gauges.
•Assist in the development of visual aids, boundary samples, and inspection criteria for extrusion profiles.
Fabrication
•Dimensional evaluation of parts using appropriate equipment, gauges and fixtures.
•Develop and optimize fabrication quality procedures and standards for operations such as machining, cutting, punching, and forming.
•Conduct root cause investigations on fabrication-related issues and oversee implementation of corrective actions.
•Support New Product Introduction (NPI) by validating manufacturing processes and documenting critical quality requirements.
•Collaborate with manager of fabricated parts from to production, ensuring conformance and repeatability.
•Participate in internal audits and continuous improvement efforts focused on fabrication processes.
Supplier
•Build and maintain strong working relationships with suppliers and promote quality improvements across the supply base.
•Monitor and analyze supplier quality performance and collaborate with suppliers, purchasing, and Sales to address nonconformances.
•Audit and assess existing and potential suppliers to ensure capability and compliance with Almag standards.
•Issue and manage Supplier Corrective Action Requests and follow through back charges to ensure cost are recuperated.
•Lead or coordinate resolution of supplier-related rejections, acting as a liaison between suppliers and internal teams
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience
•Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field; Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) with extensive experience will also be considered.
•Minimum 5 years of progressive quality engineering experience in a manufacturing environment, with a strong preference for candidates with experience in metal fabrication and/or aluminum extrusion and aluminum extrusion finishing.
•Experience supporting automotive quality systems IATF 16949 and or ISO 9001, including customer interaction, PPAP submission, and APQP project involvement in an automotive environment preferred Proven background in supplier quality management, including supplier audits, corrective action follow-up, and supplier development initiatives.
•Experience supporting or leading product launches and process validations, including development of control plans, FMEAs, and inspection instructions.
•ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or in progress; Internal Auditor certification (ISO 9001/IATF 16949) is an asset.
•Hands-on experience with quality tools, dimensional inspection, and data-driven decision making using statistical methods.
•Demonstrated success working in cross-functional teams with engineering, production, and supplier teams to resolve complex quality issues.
Technical Skills/Competence
•Advanced knowledge and hands-on application of AIAG Core Tools: APQP, PPAP, FMEA, MSA, and SPC, including experience developing full PPAP documentation for various customer requirements.
•Thorough understanding of ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949; ability to assist in system audits, document control, and QMS maintenance.
•Proficient in interpreting engineering drawings and applying GD&T principles to ensure product conformity and support tooling and inspection design.
•Skilled in structured problem-solving methodologies such as 8D, 5 Whys, Fishbone (Ishikawa), and Fault Tree Analysis; able to lead cross-functional investigations and drive sustainable corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
•Solid grasp of fabrication processes (machining, punching, forming) and ability to develop inspection standards, visual aids, and process documentation such as control plans and BOMs.
•Experience in auditing, evaluating, and developing suppliers; capable of issuing and managing SCARs, performing risk assessments, and collaborating on supplier improvement initiatives.
•Working knowledge of FARO arm an asset
•Knowledge of aluminum extrusion processes will be considered an asset.
•Proven ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities in a fast-paced environment; strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
•Strong team player with a proactive mindset; capable of mentoring peers and shop-floor staff in quality tools, procedures, and culture.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to present technical data clearly, interface effectively with customers and suppliers, and lead discussions with production and cross-functional teams.
•Must be proficient in MS Office, with strong skills in Excel.
