Job Title: Building Assets Program Instructor


Organization: Wings for L.I.F.E.

Reports to: Building Assets Program Coordinator and Wings for L.I.F.E. Executive Director


General Information:

Purpose: Prepares and executes lessons and activities for program in assigned elementary schools and completes additional tasks outside the elementary schools as necessary for the program’s functioning.

Hours: Approximately 15-20 hours per week on average; requisite hours may be more or less per week depending on factors such as lesson complexity, Wings for L.I.F.E. publicity events, and administrative duties required. Unless otherwise specified, each instructor will run programs at 4 elementary schools each week.

Exact time of program classes will depend on school schedule and day of week. Generally, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays the program is held from 3:00-4:15pm with staff expected to be at school from 2:30-4:30pm. Generally, on Wednesdays (early release day) the program is held from 1:45-3:00pm with staff expected to be at school from 1:15-3:15pm.

Commitment: Instructor is expected to work the program from August through May (entire school year).

Wages: Salary to be determined by Executive Director based on education, experience, and qualifications to teach program. Taxes will be reflected in pay stub based on W-4 filing by employee. Additional information concerning employment policies and procedures are outlined in the Employee Handbook.


Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Education, or related field required. (Extensive experience in human services, social services, or related field may be considered in lieu of specific degrees stated above.)
Able to effectively work with children in groups, as individuals, and as one class (15-25 per class).
Reliable vehicle to travel to program sites (schools) and transport supplies.

Able to pass background check a MUST.
Able to implement lesson plans.
Good communication skills, organizational skills, and management skills
Good computer skills with email programs, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel

Specific Assignments (When School is Offered On-site:


Before Arriving at School Sites:

Prepare lessons from curriculum for presentation at assigned schools
Prepare materials needed for crafts, games, and activities during lessons
Prepare and mail out class packets to all students enrolled according to class schedule
Gather and transport snacks, supplies, equipment, and materials to assigned schools
Coordinate lesson supplies/materials pick up with Craft Director &/or Program Coordinator
Copy and distribute flyers communicating information about program to parents/guardians, as directed by Program Coordinator or Executive Director


On Site Duties:

Record attendance daily
Teach lessons and facilitate activities according to curriculum at assigned schools
Pack up and transport supplies, equipment, materials to office/residence
Manage groups of 15-25 children, ages 7 to 12 years of age, so that all children are able to pay attention to the lesson and learn in a calm and positive environment
Manage and give directions to “assistants” that result in smooth program functioning [helpers include paid assistants, practicum students (college level), and high school volunteers.]
Manage sign-in sheets for helpers
Interacts positively and respectfully with children as individuals, in groups, and as one large class
Enforce rules, expectations, and rewards/consequences as specified in program policies and practices
Manage behavioral problems of children using Building Assets Program Behavior Management Guidelines
Ensure all children are signed out by approved adults as indicated on permission form; ensure any children walking home have written permission (on forms) to do so.
Contact Program Coordinator or Executive Director about any concerns requiring immediate attention


Off Site Ongoing Duties:

Promptly report any concerning comments, behavior, incidents, and problems to Program Coordinator or Executive Director (and document if requested)
Report any helper absences or notable tardiness to Program Coordinator
Document comments from students or parents/guardians which suggest they enjoy the program or see it as valuable. Submit these comments to Program Coordinator or Executive Director.
Store permission forms, supplies used daily, and other materials as necessary at own residence or inside own vehicle (Note: Sensitive information such as permission forms need to be kept in a reasonably secure place such as inside locked residence rather than inside vehicle)
Manage permission forms and parent contact information in transportable file format
Contact parents/guardians as needed on behalf of program (e.g. new enrollment, multiple absences) via phone calls and emails.
Communicate and coordinate with school staff as needed on behalf of program
Manage attendance records
Manage enrollment records (new enrollees, exiting students, and reasons for exiting)
Maintain optimal number of enrolled students at each school site (as allowed by spots available and helpers available)


Other Regularly Scheduled Duties:

Attend and participate in weekly Instructor Meetings as specified by Program Coordinator and monthly all-staff meetings.
Prepare additional monthly report information as requested by Program Coordinator or Executive Director

Physical Demands: Able to climb stairs to access program materials. Able to lift 25 pounds without assistance. Able to bend down, kneel down, and sit on floor as needed during program activities. Able to unload, set up, pack up, and reload supplies at schools (with some assistance from helpers) each day of program. Able to answer telephone, operate a computer, and other standard office equipment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Work Environment: The work environments are located in Roswell, NM and will consist of: school sites (local elementary schools), Wings for L.I.F.E. offices at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church (administrative office and Building Assets office), and own residence. Wings for L.I.F.E. administrative office contains copy machine; also contains other basic office equipment you may use upon request. Wings for L.l.F.E. Building Assets office is upstairs (no elevator available) and is used primarily for materials storage. This office may be used between 7am-7pm for lesson preparation or other work related to program (laptops and work spaces supplied; various office equipment and craft supplies and tools available).


Job Type: Part-time


Pay: $35.00 - $38.00 per hour

Expected hours: No more than 15 per week
