Role Overview
Reporting to the Lead, Advanced Process Control & Automation, the Process Control Engineer is responsible for process control improvements that drive value. The incumbent is accountable for providing and supporting effective process automation for all of Red Dog Operations at both the Red Dog Mine and Port locations.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain an effective process control system by analyzing requirements, developing and implementing hardware and software, ensuring the security of the system, and maintaining documentation to ensure cost effective process control and data acquisition.
- Communicate effectively with operating, technical, maintenance, and other groups to ensure optimum utilization of resources.
- Improve process control and instrumentation by evaluating new technology and recommending implementation where cost effective, maintaining communications with suppliers and other operations.
- Demonstrate safe work practices personally. Create positive discussion with other co-workers to ensure compliance with safety policy at all times. Enforce regulations and policies when applicable.
- Establish Personal Goals and Objectives annually that align with Departmental Goals and Objectives. (These require Supervisor approval and will be evaluated in regards to attainment during Performance Planning and Coaching reviews).
- Work with the Engineering and Projects groups to support the integration of new systems or hardware.
- Participate in Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP) and Management of Change (MOC) requirements for implementation of process or system changes.
- In consultation with Sr. Process Control Engineers, manage contractors to develop project scope, schedule, estimate, requests for proposals (RFP), drawings, and other project documents.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Undergraduate degree or diploma in electrical/controls/automation/instrumentation engineering or equivalent years of experience.
- Five (5) years of experience in a Process Control engineering role, preferably in a mining and milling environment; experience in a mill with flotation would be considered an asset.
- Knowledge of Allen Bradley, ControlLogix, Micrologix, and PLC 5, hardware and associated software is required.
- Knowledge of PLC programming, PLC messaging, and Advanced Process Control (APC) is required; Metso OCS-4D, fuzzy logic, and Allen Bradley experience will be considered an asset.
- Experience in PLC5 to ControlLogix conversion will be considered a significant asset.
- Knowledge of electrical systems and instrumentation and proficient at troubleshooting process issues.
- Proficient in creating control logic based on Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) drawings, control narratives, and shutdown keys.
- Proficient in developing control narratives, shutdown keys, and redlining P&ID drawings.
- Knowledge of Proportional, Integral, Derivative (PID) loop tuning and process modeling is required.
- Knowledge of databases, computer programming, and networking experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of OSIsoft PI historian or equivalent historian database experience is required.
- Proficient in HMI software setup and programming, preferably Wonderware Intouch software.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Windows.
- Able to thrive in a fast-paced setting.

- Complete work assigned with minimal supervision.
- Capable of working with all levels of the organization and in a team environment.
- Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
