Talen Energy has a job opening for a Mechanical Engineer. The position will be located at the Brandon Shores Power Plant in Baltimore, MD (Pasadena area) and support our fleet of power plants (Brandon Shores and H.A. Wagner). This position will report to the Maintenance Manager. We are looking for candidates with experience in the design, maintenance, or performance of mechanical systems and balance-of-plant equipment used in power generation or comparable industrial environments.

The expected salary range for this position is $95,000 to $115,000 annually. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience and other job-related factors as permitted by law. Successful candidates will also participate in Talen Energy’s Short-Term Incentive program.

Primary Purpose & Summary:

Provides engineering support and technical expertise for the operation, maintenance, and improvement of mechanical systems and equipment in a fossil-fuel power plant. Applies professional-level knowledge of plant operations, thermodynamics, and mechanical design principles to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient performance of boilers, turbines, pumps, heat-exchangers, and balance-of-plant systems, including auxiliary and pollution-control equipment.

Secondary Purpose & Summary:

Manages power plant related outage work and projects.

Responsibilities:

- Applies sound engineering judgment to troubleshoot and resolve issues involving mechanical systems, rotating equipment, and process performance.

- Leads or coordinates mechanical projects involving maintenance, equipment upgrades, or major overhauls, providing technical direction to internal staff and contractors.

- Performs and evaluates engineering studies and investigations of problems associated with the performance, maintenance and operations of boiler-pressure vessels and, in some cases, high pressure piping.

- Develops project scopes, cost estimates, and schedules for maintenance, modification, and capital projects; maintains long-term mechanical equipment improvement plans.

- Provides guidance to engineering and technical personnel assigned to assist in work assignments.

- Keeps abreast of technical developments affecting Company, department and area of expertise.

- Demonstrated ability to complete job assignments in a setting that requires teamwork, as well as independent decision making.

- Demonstrated ability in the evaluation of OEM recommendations and the ability to discern the applicability of the recommendations based on individual unit operating history and risk assessment.

- Ability to direct engineering, planning and other craft in their duties.

- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both written and orally.

- Understanding of boiler, turbine, generator and balance of plant operation, including fossil fuel handling, fuel combustion, and combustion by-products handling and control.

- Ability to read blueprints, schematics and manufacturer specifications for mechanical equipment.

- Ability to develop and execute project of different budget sizes and scopes.

- Understanding of project management, including project flow documentation, project financial (budgeting, forecasting, cost track, etc).

- Ability to adapt in a fast-paced environment to solve issues and to provide insight on action plans.

Education & Experience Required:

- B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering and two to five years of experience in an industrial setting.

- In-depth understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals, applicable design codes.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer, stamina to maintain attention to detail, despite interruptions, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen for long period of time. Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the phone. It will be necessary at times to visit power plants or other potentially hazardous industrial locations, primarily for the purpose of evaluating performance.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Some experience with air heaters, pulverizes and environmental control equipment is preferred but not required.

Physical Demands:

At the Power Plant facility and in/out door environment, must be able to work in adverse conditions that may include, but not be limited to the following:

- While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to climb stairs, ladders, and work on elevated platforms. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.

- Must be able to lift 45 pounds overhead and 50 pounds from the floor to 36 inches.

- Must be willing to travel to other facilities.

- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color distinction with vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

- Must be able to work around high voltage.

- Must have manual dexterity and ability to manipulate keyboards.

- Must be capable of wearing respirators and working in dusty environments.

- On occasions employee may be required to work at heights to collect data or conduct other assessments, where guarding or fall protection is required.

Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills, read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve complex problems, observe and interpret situations, use math and mathematical reasoning; deal with changing, intensive deadlines, and interact with internal and external clients. Must be able to concentrate while under time constraints.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.

The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and wet or humid conditions. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock and vibration.

Exposure to hazards associated with power and hand tools, dust, fumes, high pressure steam, high temperatures and confined spaces; and may be regularly subject to external environmental conditions such as cold, heat dust, snow or noise and fumes from equipment or chemicals.

Occupationally hazardous noise exposure may occur in the power plant or other locations where heavy industrial equipment is in use.
