The P PD PROJECT MANAGEMENT Department of the P INVESTMENT PLANNING & STRATEGY Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 management vacancy available. (Role: MANAGER SUPERVISOR)
JOB FUNCTION:
Plans, directs, manages, and controls the functions and activities of the department to manage projects related to the transmission and distribution system in support of company strategies and goals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides direction, technical knowledge, expertise, guidance and support to Project Managers.
- Plans and manages the functions and activities of the Project Management department and its personnel in managing large T&D projects.
- Provides the external and internal planning and strategic leadership responsible for the completion of large transmission and distribution projects (capital and O&M) and achieving annual objectives per industry best practices and methodologies.
- Represents projects for internal executive budget review and strategy meetings. Facilitates internal and external executive-level project meetings.
- Provides testimony at public hearings relating, but not limited to, project specifics and company policy issues, as necessary.
- Sets priorities for department. Develops, implements and administers policies and procedures to support the department’s mission and departmental and corporate policies/strategies.
- Supervises and administers department personnel matters including performance appraisals, interviews, and employee guidance, discipline, recognition, and support.
- Ensures sufficient trained staff and resources are made available to effectively meet department, division, and corporate objectives.
- Develops and manages department operation forecast and budget.
- Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
- Registered in Hawaii as a Professional Engineer, certified as a Professional Project Manager by a nationally recognized professional society such as the Project Management Institute or certified as a Planner by a nationally recognized professional society such as the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is highly desirable.
- Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or in Planning (or related field) or equivalent training.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles of supervision, normally acquired through related training, and several years experience in supervising people.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles of project management, including the principles of matrix management and cost analysis.
- Thorough knowledge of governmental permits and approvals as they relate to design and construction projects.
- Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications such as; spreadsheets, word processing, etc.
- Thorough knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.
- Thorough knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.
- Must have ability to manage complex governmental, community and company issues related to project planning and completion.
- Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license. Must meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives.
- Ability to handle difficult and/or sensitive issues while using tact, courtesy and discretion.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills to influence, motivate, and persuade various groups or individuals.
- Supervisory/leadership skills and abilities to work with a variety of individuals occasionally dealing with sensitive, difficult or confrontational issue.
- In-depth analytical and computational skills.

- Ability to conceptualize new ideas quickly.- Multiple (8+) year’s experience initiating, planning and executing design and construction projects involving governmental permits and approvals with several (5-7) years of experience managing projects.
- Must have experience working and communicating with executive management.
- Must have experience in providing testimony and fielding questions at public hearings and governmental meetings.
