Edgewater Technical Associates is seeking qualified candidates for an IT Specialist opportunity in Carlsbad, NM to support the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP).
The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is the nation’s only permanent nuclear waste repository for defense-generated transuranic (TRU) waste generated from Department of Energy (DOE) sites across the country. Waste is permanently isolated over 2,000 feet underground in deep salt beds.
The IT Specialist supports Safeguards and Security (S&S) operations by assisting with the administration, monitoring, and basic troubleshooting of site technology systems, including physical access control and video surveillance platforms. This position emphasizes IT fundamentals, system administration, user support, and technical problem-solving, with training provided on site-specific security systems and applications.
This role is ideal for an IT professional with strong technical aptitude who is interested in expanding their skill set into physical security and safeguards systems within a DOE nuclear environment.
- Assist in the administration of physical security systems such as physical access control systems (PACS) and video assessment and surveillance systems (VASS)
- Monitor daily performance of IT and security-related systems to ensure availability and reliability
- Provide first-level technical support and troubleshooting for system disruptions and user issues
- Escalate complex technical issues to engineers, vendors, or subject matter experts as appropriate
- Assist with system testing, updates, and routine operational checks
- Support documentation, procedures, and user guides related to IT and security systems
- Assist with developing and delivering basic user training and system demonstrations
- Learn and maintain working knowledge of site security systems, manufacturer specifications, and compliance requirements
- Support lifecycle sustainment activities and continuous improvement initiatives
- Perform other duties as assigned
o Associate’s degree with four (4) years of relevant professional experience, or
o High School Diploma or equivalent with eight (8) years of relevant professional experience
- Strong general IT proficiency (systems, applications, networking fundamentals, or technical support)
- Ability and willingness to learn specialized security and site-specific systems
- Strong communication, documentation, and customer-support skills
- Experience in one or more of the following:
o IT support, system administration, or technical operations
- Familiarity with enterprise software platforms or system monitoring tools
- Experience working in regulated, high-reliability, or mission-critical environments
- Prior exposure to security platforms such as CCure, Software House, or Avigilon (not required; training provided)
- United States Citizenship
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a "Q" Clearance
