Collective Resource Compost Cooperative is a specialty waste hauler that collects food scraps from residential and commercial customers for composting. Our business is based on swapping each customer’s full container for a clean one with every service, and consolidating waste material at our garage for transport to a composting facility. The Garage Manager is a crucial role in our operation.
The Garage Manager is responsible for leading the crew that:
- cleans and maintains our garage facility,
- washes compost containers for daily re-use, and
- supports the driver team in unloading trucks and transferring food scrap material to a rolloff dumpster.
- Manage team of full- and part-time Garage Crew, currently 3 full-time-equivalents.
- Ensure high standards of safety, productivity, teamwork, and quality control.
- Training, scheduling and supervision of Garage Crew in all duties, especially daily washing of 500+ containers.- Record and verify Garage Crew time sheets.
- Recruitment and evaluation of Garage Crew, in partnership with the General Manager.
- Participate in the daily work cycle of washing 5-gallon buckets with lids and 32-gallon wheeled totes.
- Safely operate a high-powered pressure washer, often for hours per day.
- Track daily container requirements and take responsibility that each day’s quota is met.
- Inspect and spot-clean washed containers and ensure quality control.
- Organize containers for next use.
- With the Garage Crew, assist drivers unloading full containers from their routes, weighing material and using hydraulic lifter and manual effort to “tip” material in totes into rolloff dumpster.
- Frequently monitor computer records of load weights to correct errors and help determine when the rolloff needs to be swapped out.
- With the Garage Crew, clean floors in the washing and tipping areas.
- Clean and tidy office and restrooms; take out trash/recycling/compost.
- Monitor inventory of garage, office and truck supplies and purchase as needed.
- Participate in operations meetings, bringing garage needs and interests to the table.
- Help to staff events and drive routes as needed, given appropriate training.
- Help to organize Zero-Waste Bag recycling program and other storage functions at the garage.
- Move and park trucks to maximize use of parking and loading areas.
- Deliver excellent care and consideration to customers; this is a premium service for environmentally conscious consumers.
- Learn about commercial composting — what materials are acceptable, what are "contamination". Garage Crew must help keep the waste stream "clean".
- Be a licensed driver (at least 2 years preferred) with a clean driving record. (CDL is not required.)
- Have great attention to detail, and a high comfort level with computer and smartphone usage.
- Have an outstanding work ethic, problem solving skills, and ability to work independently and stay motivated for long stretches.
- Show outstanding reliability for scheduled shifts, dedication to getting the daily work done, and team spirit.
- Have great written and oral communication skills and communicate regularly with supervisors and co-workers.
- Be able to lift up to 50 pounds safely and routinely. Requires frequent physical motion and exposure to organic waste material, wash water and cleaning products, and a noisy environment.
