Reporting to the President, the role of the Director of Engineering is to lead our engineering team, driving both technical excellence, effective project delivery and business performance. This role is a hybrid of technical leadership and financial stewardship, requiring a hands-on approach to engineering and project execution while managing the profitability of the engineering division.
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers and project delivery professionals, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Participate in strategic planning meetings to align engineering operations with organizational goals and market opportunities.
- Manage departmental budgets, monitor project costs, and oversee profit and loss division performance to ensure financial targets are achieved.
- Ensure effective communication and coordination between engineering disciplines, project teams, and other departments.
- Mentor and develop staff, fostering accountability, technical growth, and business acumen.
- Establish KPIs and performance metrics to drive both technical and business success.
- Manage recruitment, onboarding, and professional development of engineering staff.
- Foster a culture of accountability, ownership, and results-focused performance.
- Ensure the division maintains good standing with APEGA and is compliant with the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act, demonstrating regulatory excellence.
- Provide strategic direction and oversight to ensure engineering standards, procedures, and QA/QC programs are effectively implemented and continuously improved across all projects.
- Ensure timely and accurate review, approval, and governance of engineering deliverables, maintaining accountability for compliance and quality across disciplines.
- Oversee and guide the execution of electrical design activities—substations, protection & control, SCADA, communications, and equipment selection—by mentoring leads and ensuring alignment with organizational and client objectives.
- Partner with project management and senior leadership to establish priorities, allocate resources effectively, and proactively manage technical and operational risks.
- Evaluate complex technical issues, support project decision-making, and provide final approval or escalation on critical engineering matters to ensure excellence in project delivery.
- Provide technical direction and oversight across projects, ensuring solutions are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with organizational goals.
- Support project planning through schedule input, risk identification, and mitigation strategies.
- Ensure effective communication and coordination between engineering disciplines, project teams, and other departments.
- Monitor and report on project financial performance, including hours, costs, and revenue impact. Identify and implement cost optimization strategies without compromising quality or delivery.
- Allocate resources effectively across projects to maximize team productivity and project profitability.
- Provide support to the estimating and preconstruction groups in the way of technical advice, discipline specific estimates, execution schedule, provision of design resources.
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or related Engineering degree required. Must be registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
- Post-secondary education in business considered an asset.
- Experience in providing technical leadership to engineering team across multiple disciplines.
- Demonstrated experience in managing the financial performance of departments or multi-project environments
- Minimum 10 years in medium/high voltage power distribution design.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in the Utilities industry.
- Dedicated team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to work within strict deadlines.
- Possess strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Preference will be given to candidates that possess previous experience in utilities or electrical distribution design.
- Exceptional computer skills to include CADD, Trane Software and Microsoft Office products.
