Position Summary:
The Ferrous Yard Supervisor oversees daily operations related to ferrous material handling, sorting, processing, and shipping requirements. This role is responsible for leading front-line employees, maintaining safety standards, and ensuring production targets are met efficiently and with high quality. The Ferrous Yard Supervisor will focus specifically on the movement, sorting, processing, and shipping of ferrous scrap metal such as carbon steel and cast-iron grades.
- Ensure health and safety policies are strictly followed in all ferrous yard operations.
- Conducts daily safety huddles.
- Identify equipment training needs and ensure safe work procedures are understood and practiced.
- Execute operational schedules and production targets set by the Yard and Operations Managers.
- Lead and supervise employees working in the ferrous area, ensuring efficient workflows and high performance.
- Conduct regular inspections of ferrous processing areas and equipment, reporting improvement opportunities.
- Collaborate with other department supervisors to ensure smooth flow of material between yards.
- Monitor and ensure the quality control of ferrous materials, reducing contamination and consumer rejections.
- Maintain accurate inventory of incoming and outgoing ferrous materials.
- Administer employee evaluations, coaching, and corrective actions per company policy.
- Foster a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Support organizational compliance with local, state, and federal environmental and safety regulations.
· Expand value-add opportunities within the ferrous yard operations by evaluating upgrade opportunities within various material grades and purchase inflows.
- Strong technical knowledge of ferrous metals, heavy equipment, and processing machinery.
- Proven leadership and people management skills in a production or yard environment.
- Ability to analyze and improve processes using production metrics and KPIs.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and yard management systems.
- Associate degree or equivalent industry experience preferred.
- Minimum of 1-3 years’ supervisory experience/or equivalent to.
- Ability to work outdoors year-round in variable weather.
- Frequent standing, walking, and lifting up to 75 pounds.
