EME is seeking a motivated and skilled Electrical Engineer to join our growing team. This role is ideal for an established Electrical Engineer with two (2) to four (4) years of experience who possesses a strong foundation in electrical theory coupled with a practical, hands-on approach to field work and an interest in computer programming. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for performing field electrical testing, overseeing utility scale generator repairs and commissioning of generators. They will also perform new and existing machine electrical analysis, utilizing both classical methods and specialized software to ensure performance and reliability. Furthermore, the candidate should possess a familiarity with coding and the ability to utilize it to improve their workflow, as well as actively contributing to progressing development efforts company-wide by developing custom programs or scripts to automate and enhance new and existing analysis processes. This position offers a unique opportunity to blend hands-on electrical engineering skills with computational expertise, contributing directly to the efficiency and innovation of our company. You must also be comfortable interacting directly with customers and collaborating with EME’s technical staff.
- Use classic and finite element analysis tools for electromagnetic design and evaluation of new and existing generator components.
- Perform thermal analysis of generator components (windings, cores) utilizing the resistive-equivalent methodology.
- Failure analysis of rotating equipment.
- Reverse engineering of existing components.
- Perform and analyze comprehensive electrical diagnostic testing in the field (such as Insulation Resistance, Polarization Index, DC Hipot, Dissipation Factor, Partial Discharge, and ELCID).
- Lead engineering projects by developing quality assurance documentation, project plans and by providing input to costing and schedules and resolving technical issues.
- Oversee the repair of generator electrical components in the field such as winding repairs and author procedures, specifications and drawings to direct the work.
- Develop technical specifications and work with vendors to solicit quotations.
- Write formal technical reports.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Independently develop Python programs to automate repetitive calculation processes currently performed manually or in existing Mathcad sheets within the Engineering Services department.
- Collaborate with senior engineers to understand calculation processes and identify opportunities to streamline existing workflows and improve efficiency through custom program development.
o Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
o Credential (Bachelor of Science, Minor, etc.) in Computer Science or a proven ability to understand and apply programming concepts.
o Two (2) to four (4) years’ experience in engineering, construction or related fields performing testing, design, and analysis with specific experience in:
- Electrical testing of rotating machinery
- Electromagnetic machine design and evaluation, classically and via finite element analysis
- Thermal and ventilation analysis
- Industrial equipment condition assessments
o Practical experience with Python programming language and a willingness to further develop these skills.
o Demonstrated experience with finite element analysis (FEA) and 3D modeling software (e.g., ANSYS Maxwell, Solidworks).
o Strong understanding of electrical principles, including fundamentals of electrical machine design.
o Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
o Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam or a willingness to do so within the first year of employment.
o Valid U.S. driver’s license, non-restricted passport, and reliable transportation.
o Must be able to access, enter, and work within industrial environments including hydroelectric, gas turbine, and steam turbine generator housings and related structures.
o Must be able to work in confined or restricted spaces in accordance with OSHA safety requirements and employer safety procedures.
o Must be able to crawl, kneel, climb ladders, bend, stoop, and maneuver around mechanical equipment and tight spaces for extended periods.
o Must be able to stand or walk for up to 8–12 hours per day during onsite inspections or field assignments.
o Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiratory protection when required, and pass applicable respirator medical evaluations and fit testing.
o Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
o Must be physically able to access elevated work platforms, scaffolding, turbine decks, and uneven surfaces.
o Must be able to tolerate work environments that may include noise, vibration, low lighting, and temperature variations.
