The Fleet Director will oversee all aspects of fleet operations for a construction company managing more than 1,000 vehicles and specialized overhead distribution equipment, including bucket trucks, digger derricks, service trucks, trailers, and other heavy construction assets. This role is responsible for strategic planning, acquisition, maintenance, compliance, and lifecycle management of all company-owned and leased assets. This Director will also lead and optimize the in-house mechanics and maintenance team, ensuring maximum fleet availability, safety, compliance, and cost-efficiency to support the company’s field operations.
- Develop and execute the long-term fleet strategy to support business objectives, optimize asset utilization, and reduce operating costs.
- Lead a multi-site team, including fleet manager, supervisor, and in-house mechanics, ensuring alignment with safety, compliance, and productivity goals.
- Collaborate with operations, safety, and finance teams to forecast fleet needs and budget requirements.
- Oversee acquisition, leasing, disposal, and replacement of vehicles/equipment based on lifecycle cost analysis.
- Implement preventive maintenance programs to maximize uptime, reduce breakdowns, and extend equipment life.
- Establish standardized operating procedures for maintenance, fueling, repairs, and inspections across all locations.
- Manage the in-house repair facility for large bucket trucks and other specialty equipment, ensuring adherence to OEM specifications.
- Ensure compliance with DOT, OSHA, EPA, and state/local regulations for commercial and heavy vehicles.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, certifications, and maintenance activities.
- Lead initiatives to improve driver safety and reduce incidents, including training programs and telematics monitoring.
- Develop and manage the annual fleet budget, tracking all capital and operational expenses.
- Collaborate with finance and operations to forecast capital needs over a 3- to 5-year horizon, aligning with projected growth and project demands.
- Negotiate vendor contracts for vehicle purchases, leases, parts, and services to achieve cost savings.
- Monitor fuel consumption, telematics data, and repair costs to identify cost-reduction opportunities.
- Maintain and manage fleet management systems, telematics, and GPS tracking to improve operational visibility.
- Generate and present regular reports on fleet performance, downtime, repair trends, and ROI metrics to senior leadership.
- Drive adoption of predictive analytics to improve maintenance scheduling and asset utilization.
- Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Automotive Technology, or related field. Certification in fleet management (NAFA Certified Automotive Fleet Manager - CAFM, or equivalent).
- Preferred:
Experience in construction, utility, or heavy-equipment-intensive industry; prior oversight of in-house maintenance operations for specialty vehicles (e.g., bucket trucks, cranes). 10 years of progressive fleet management experience, with at least 5 years in managing 500+ assets.- Proven leadership and team management skills, with experience in multi-location operations.
- Strong knowledge of DOT/FMCSA compliance, vehicle/equipment specifications, and maintenance best practices.
- Proficient in fleet management software, telematics, and data analytics.
- Excellent negotiation, budgeting, and vendor management abilities.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a continuous improvement mindset.
- Ability to work in both office and field environments, including visits to maintenance shops and project sites.
- Travel up to 30% to company locations, vendors, and industry events.
- $140,000 - $175,000 based on experience, qualifications, and performance.
