The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. This position is eligible for annual incentive pay and has the opportunity for continued salary growth. If you are hired at American Water your base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as market, geography, skills, education and/or experience. The Manager of Cybersecurity Monitoring is responsible for leading the organization’s Security Operations Center (SOC) and managing a team of Level 1 and Level 2 Cybersecurity Analysts. This individual plays a dual role: overseeing day-to-day operations while also performing hands-on monitoring, detection, and incident response activities. The manager will ensure comprehensive coverage of cyber threats across both IT and Operational Technology (OT) environments, supporting the protection of critical infrastructure, sensitive data, and regulatory compliance obligations.
- Operational Oversight: Ability to manage daily SOC operations, ensuring consistent coverage, workload balance, and SLA adherence.
- Mentorship and Development: Experienced in coaching junior employees at American Water to improve analytical capabilities and procedural discipline.
- Escalation Management: Skilled in triaging and prioritizing incidents and making decisions under pressure.
- Documentation upkeep.
- Performance Management: Establishing and tracking performance metrics (KPIs/SLAs) for SOC effectiveness.
- Operational Leadership, Water Utility Experience, Project involvement, Security Operations, Change Management Processes.
- Strong knowledge of digital technologies and applicability for the water and wastewater industries.
- In-depth knowledge of SOC operations, incident response, and threat intelligence.
- Leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong expertise with enterprise-class security tools and platforms (SIEM, SOAR, EDR, IAM, vulnerability management).
- Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field; or equivalent professional experience.
- Appropriate technical certification in specialty area preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in Information Technology operations.
- Minimum 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
- Experience in utilities, critical infrastructure, or other highly regulated industries strongly preferred.
- Excellent decision-making ability, balancing what is right with what is realistic
- Dedicated to operational excellence, reliability, and continuous improvement.
- Flexibility to adjust to multiple demands, shifting priorities, ambiguity, and rapid change
- Provide timely and accurate reporting on SOC metrics, incident trends, and threat landscape updates to leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to work and team with a multitude of different people from various lines of business as well as within the IT organization.
