Controller - Lead Financial Excellence with Focused Energy

Purpose of the Role
The Controller will play a crucial role in providing financial guidance, overseeing and managing the accounting function across multiple clients in various industries. As a go-to resource for our clients, you will provide insights and strategies to achieve better results. This position requires adaptability and expertise in handling diverse businesses, ensuring accurate financial reporting, data integrity, and the development of comprehensive controls and budgets to mitigate risk and support client goals.
Responsibilities
•Client Lead (50% of the time): Act as the main point of contact with the client, providing direction to other FE staff and/or the client’s internal staff as necessary. Ensure that accounting and finance operations are accurate, timely, and informative, and help ensure the client derives value from our services, guidance, and leadership.
•Client Support (50% of the time): Serve as an individual contributor, overseeing accounting activities in support of a VP or CFO who serves as the client lead.
•Client Satisfaction & Value Creation: Build strong relationships with clients, earning their trust through exceptional service delivery and value-added financial guidance. Act as the Client Lead when required, supporting other FE staff members in multi-role engagements.
•Execution: Ensure that committed deliverables are consistently completed on time and to a degree that addresses root cause issues and delivers value to clients.
•Accounting & Financial Management: Oversee and execute accounting operations and processes (General Ledger, Month and Year End Close, Reconciliations, Inventory, Billing/Invoicing) for multiple small and medium-sized businesses. Ensure accurate trial balances and financial statement preparation. Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure accuracy, compliance, and financial integrity. Manage and oversee the FE and/or the client’s accounting teams.
•Financial Reporting & Analysis: Create and prepare actionable financial reports for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations. Provide insights and recommendations, with specific tactics and strategies based on financial data. Ensure clients understand their financial position and can make informed decisions while understanding the implications.
•Budget & Forecast Management: Collaborate with client leadership to create and optimize budgets. Monitor, manage, and analyze actual performance against the budget, providing recommendations for forecast adjustments. Assist in financial forecasting to support strategic planning and business growth.
•Cash Flow Management: Monitor cash flow and liquidity positions, providing actionable recommendations to optimize working capital and manage financial risks. Identify potential cash flow gaps and implement appropriate strategies to address them.
•Compliance, Regulatory, and Taxation: Ensure compliance with accounting principles (GAAP/IFRS), relevant regulations, and tax requirements. Liaise with external auditors and tax advisors to facilitate smooth audits and accurate tax filings.
•Systems Management: Lead the design, selection, build, and implementation of systems and processes to ensure efficient operations, with a focus on automation and workflow simplification.
•Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of accounting processes, systems, and reporting. Implement best practices and streamlined workflows to improve financial operations.
•Effective Communication: Engage in regular and clear communication with clients and stakeholders, addressing queries and concerns promptly. Present financial information in a clear and concise manner tailored to the audience to facilitate decision-making.
•Team Collaboration: Work closely with the client’s team to ensure accurate financial data and create a culture of fiscal responsibility infused with creative problem-solving. Provide guidance, training, and support to enhance team skills and knowledge. Participate in regularly scheduled meetings with the Focused Energy staff.

Qualifications & Competencies
•Advanced degree in Finance and/or Accounting.
•Proven working experience as a Financial Controller.
•10+ years of combined accounting and finance experience.
•Experience with systems such as Excel, QBO, Expensify, Gusto, Bill.com, Google, and Netsuite.
•Thorough knowledge and real-world application of accounting principles, procedures, and US GAAP for companies in various industries.
•Experience managing internal or client resources to achieve goals and deliver excellent value, with strong delegation skills.
•Extensive experience in creating financial statements, reporting, and financial analysis to drive actionable insights and solve root cause problems.
•Excellent organizational, problem-solving, project management, and communication skills.
•Experience with SaaS, Technology, Services, and Manufacturing companies is a plus.
•Compliance with standard operating procedures as defined by Focused Energy to ensure consistency and predictability.
Compensation
•Competitive Pay: $55 to $80 per hour, depending on experience.
