Purpose of Job:
Energetic and impactful Communications and Media Relations Specialist to develop and implement internal and external communications strategies and content for various platforms while promoting ODEC’s vision, mission and values. This individual will be responsible for managing ODEC’s public-facing channels, including websites and social media platforms, and developing and implementing strategies to strengthen ODEC’s public image while upholding brand identity, messaging consistency, and communications standards.
The successful candidate will demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills, relaying accurate and effective messages, and understanding of intended audiences.
This position is located in ODEC’s Glen Allen, Virginia office.
Essential responsibilities include:
•Developing creative concepts and craft compelling content across a range of platforms, including marketing collateral, website copy, social media, presentations, internal communications, press releases and other outreach materials.
•Prepare and disseminate regular updates to social media outlets and policymakers, showcasing ODEC’s initiatives and community relations efforts, while keeping employees, ODEC board members and other stakeholders informed and engaged.
•Developing effective communications strategy leveraging strong writing and editing skills to engage internal and external audiences.
•Maintaining editorial calendars and project timelines, ensuring alignment with cooperative messaging.
•Ensuring alignment with brand guidelines, cooperative principles and regulatory standards.
•Leading media relations efforts by developing comprehensive media plans, creating press kits including fact sheets, and news releases and managing the media monitoring tools.
•Supporting content creation by attending ODEC events to capture written narratives, quotes and supporting visuals.
•Collaborating with ODEC members and external business partners and communicating regularly with ODEC member communications professionals and the Virginia Maryland Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC).
Work Experience:
•Minimum 5 years’ experience working in the communication and public relations field with demonstrated expertise in writing, media relations and content strategy.
Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
•Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills. Ability to effectively translate technical information into layman’s language.
•Excellent project management with organizational skills and ability to juggle multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
•Must be familiar with digital and social media platforms including strategy development and content scheduling tools.
•Effective written and oral communication skills with all levels of the organization, external partners, and audiences.
•Ability to interact effectively and coordinate closely with multiple ODEC departments and external business partners.
•Intermediate level proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and graphic art software required.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
•Strong graphics and design skills preferred.
•Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or video editing experience preferred.
•Experience with media monitoring tools and analytics platforms preferred.
•Understanding of the electric utility industry helpful.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, public relations or a related field, or equivalent experience required.
Travel details: Frequent day trips and occasional overnight travel required in this position
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
•Hand-eye coordination to use a keyboard and computer monitor the majority of the day to include working on a laptop and smartphone
•Interact effectively with others through verbal communication in-person, over the phone, via video, email and text
•Work full days (8 hours) in an office environment with occasional evening and weekend work.
•Conduct frequent travel via automobile to ODEC-owned/operated sites which may entail some overnight travel. Commercial airline for occasional conferences/meetings.
