Salary Range: $45.85 - $51.33 General Summary Of Duties

Responsible for learning Journey Traffic Signal and Lighting Specialist position through after-hours coursework and process training requiring overtime work as necessary.

Essential Functions

- Learns to use and operate all tools and equipment pertaining to electrical wiring, components and controls for traffic signal equipment, overhead and underground streetlighting lines

- Learns to identify and handle all materials and components associated with installation and maintenance of traffic signal controller devices, secondary overhead and underground street lighting lines and interface equipment.

- Learns to read and interpret various overhead and underground streetlight prints and drawings.

- Learns to work above street intersections and in underground handholes.

- Learns to troubleshoot multi-function fixed, timed, and solid-state traffic control devices.

- Learns to adjust and properly time traffic signals.

- Communicates with employees and other departments to assure proper understanding of job procedures, daily activities, and safety procedures, etc.

- Communicates with customers to promote a positive awareness of BWL responsibility

- Learns to drive and operate bucket and platform trucks.

- Must obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) levels 1 and 2 certifications prior to receiving U.S. Department of Labor Journey worker certificate.

- Must be willing and able to work standby rotation as required.

- Performs other duties as necessitated by job responsibilities.

- Required to follow BWL safety manual and wears required personal protective equipment.

- Attends training for safety awareness and/or skills improvement as required by supervisor, BWL, or governmental agency such as MIOSHA.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

Pre-Apprenticeship requirement is: Math Level: 5, Reading Level: 5, Writing Level: 2.

High school diploma or equivalent. Three (3) years Traffic Signal Specialist field experience. Must obtain International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) level 1 certification within 1 year of hire and level 2 certification within 2 years of hire. If candidate possesses IMSA level 1 certification at time of hire, they must obtain level 2 certification within 1 year of hire. Must become Journey Traffic Signal Maintenance Specialist and State of Michigan licensed Electrician within four years of hire. If candidate is a Journey Traffic Signal Maintenance Specialist and State of Michigan licensed Electrician, they are eligible for maximum hourly pay rate. All other qualified candidates receive minimum hourly pay rate. Following qualifications are preferred: attendance in Traffic Control Equipment school or knowledge of service area.

COMMERCIAL DRIVERS LICENSE (CDL)

Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. If an Internal applicant does not possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Class A endorsement, they will be required to pass the Department of Transportation physical exam and State of MI written portion of CDL examination within 15 days of transfer and successfully pass the MI CDL skills/road test within 6 months of the date of internal transfer. Individuals will be subject to DOT requirements in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA), including random testing for controlled substances and alcohol.

Physical Requirements

Lifts controllers and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds. Good visual acuity required to identify wire coding and operate platform/bucket trucks. Must be able to work above street intersection from platform or bucket truck as well as in hand holes. Job functions require considerable standing as well as ability to stoop, bend, twist and climb.

Working Conditions

Outdoor temperature and humidity ranges. Noise and dust levels may be high at times when working above street intersections. Must work in high traffic areas. Occasional exposure to confined spaces.
