Description


Reporting to the Manager, Health & Safety, the Advisor, Health & Safety Programs and Initiatives is responsible for coordinating the development, implementation, and sustainment of enterprise-wide health and safety (H&S) programs and initiatives. This role involves close collaboration with all Business Units and provides professional guidance on health and safety best practices, regulatory compliance, and safety excellence. The Advisor plays a key role in driving strategic programs and initiatives that promote innovation, optimize ways of working, manage risk, and deliver valuable solutions to end user.


Key Activities and Responsibilities


Design and propose business cases that defines the value of H&S projects to end users and decision-makers.

Develop and implement strategic H&S programs and initiatives aligned with organizational priorities.
Develop project charters and plans to ensure the effective delivery of H&S initiatives.
Establish performance metrics and assessment criteria to measure program effectiveness.
Facilitate workshops and collaboration opportunities with stakeholders to plan, develop, and implement H&S initiatives.
Establish and maintain strong collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Create and revise policies, standards, quick-reference guides, and other H&S materials.
Develop and deliver H&S training programs to enhance organizational competency and capacity.
Monitor emerging OHS regulatory and industry best practices and recommend proactive change management strategies.
Serve as an occupational health and safety (OHS) subject matter expert (SME), interpreting legislative requirements, advising on best practices, and recommending risk treatment strategies.
Facilitate risk assessments and support the maintenance of the enterprise-wide H&S risk register.
Design H&S campaigns, communications, and awareness materials.
Monitor and analyze H&S performance and recommend solutions for improvement.
Support the development of and participate in internal H&S assurance activities.
Support the operation of the Office Safety Program
Provide H&S coaching and guidance to leaders and Joint Health and Safety Committee members.
Collaborate with affiliated companies, industry peers, and industry associations to advance safety initiatives.
Participate in incident investigations and root cause analysis, as required.
Support emergency and business continuity response efforts, as required.
Education, Skills and Experience


Undergraduate degree in occupational health and safety, risk management, or a related field.

A diploma in occupational health and safety, risk management, or a related field along with 10+ years of experience,

8+ years of H&S experience in the energy sector (e.g., production facility operations, midstream operations, petrochemical operations, power generation, etc.) with a strong understanding the risks associated with facility and pipeline operations, maintenance, and construction.

A recognized professional OHS certification is required.

For example: Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner (CMIOSH), or equivalent

Proven ability to build relationships and liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders, regulatory bodies, and cross-functional teams.
Strong understanding of management systems and systems thinking.
Experience managing enterprise-wide H&S projects using project management processes and tools such as project charters, project plans, stakeholder management plans, change management plans, implementation plans, Gantt charts, and risk registers.
Strong understanding in “Safety Differently” and Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) philosophies.
Proficiency in developing, implementing, monitoring, and sustaining H&S programs.
Advanced knowledge of safety leadership programs and contractor safety management.
Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Advanced knowledge of Alberta OHS legislation.
Experience with H&S assurance activities, including inspections, observations, program reviews, and audits.
Proficiency with HSE and work management platforms such as Enablon, sdsBinders, and Maximo.
Strong written and verbal communication, analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
A project management certification is an asset

Hours and Schedule



Monday-Friday, full time, 40 hours per week


This is an office-based role that requires flexibility to travel up to 25% of annual time to Inter Pipeline’s field and operational areas, including construction, operating and reclamation sites.

Worksites include hydrocarbon processing facilities, petrochemical manufacturing, and hydrocarbon pipeline transmission facilities.

Overnight travel may be required for distant worksite visits.

Safety-Sensitive Position

As this position is identified as safety and security sensitive, employment of a final candidate will be conditional upon completion of pre-employment medical, drug/alcohol, drivers abstract, employment verification and criminal background check assessments with satisfactory results.



Vehicle Operations

A valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license and an acceptable driver’s abstract are required.

Must be capable of safely driving vehicles including SUVs and pick-up trucks on city and highway roads, resource roads, and field sites for work-related travel.
