SAFETY ADVISOR

Position Summary


The Safety Advisor will report to the HSE/HR Manager and act as the company’s primary safety representative on their assigned sites. The Safety Advisor will be responsible for identifying and controlling potential health and safety hazards related to all contracts in accordance with applicable safety laws in British Columbia. The Safety Advisor ensures that our workers are following established policies and safety regulations including those outlined in our Occupational Health & Safety Management System.


What We Offer:

$80,000 to $100,000 per year based on experience

General Duties & Responsibilities:

Adapt and lead the delivery of our OHS educational programs to all workers across all job sites
Conduct on site safety, and jobsite orientations
Maintain open communication with the Site Leadership Team to ensure ongoing compliance with the OHS Management System
Inform workers of potential dangers in the workplace and advise them of precautionary measures
Provide responses to workers regarding any concerns about occupational health and safety requirements
Participate in pre‐job meetings and tail‐gate meetings
Facilitate appropriate planning and communication between project team members and JHSC members
Review subcontractors’ safety materials and the qualifications of their personnel, as appropriate
Coordinate safety training, coaching and orientations
Conduct daily safety observations and inspections, informing all workers regarding the outcomes of these inspections; and, forwarding the reports to the construction managers, JHSC and BLT members
Continually identify hazards, assessing safety risks and implement controls
Identify and document unsafe acts or conditions that require immediate correction and communicate them to the supervisor responsible
Notify Construction Managers, JHSC members and BLT members of all incidents and safety concerns
Enact stop‐work procedures as required
Ensure that all incidents, accidents, property damage and vehicle incidents are reported promptly, investigated as required and communicated to the Management team.
Oversee and participate in incident investigations
Conduct weekly safety meetings and provide the minutes to Site Supervisors
Ensure that all required safety documentation is reviewed and stored within Site Docs
Create and conduct Emergency Response Plans, Traffic Management Plans, Standard Operating Procedures, Hazard and Risk Assessments, Safe work practices, and any other safety related reports, procedures and documents as required


General Duties & Responsibilities continued:

Actively participate in ensuring the job site is safe including, but not limited to, ensuring the appropriate PPE, signage, work permits, guarding, covers, risk assessments, safe work procedures, safety tape, etc. are in place in advance of work commencement
Perform visual Safety inspections of heavy‐duty equipment and fleet vehicles and to assist in ensuring all safety compliances are executed
Lifting and handling signage, power tools and ancillary equipment (such as lifting straps and chains) to perform visual inspections, to assist in the proper placement, usage, retrieval and storage


Key Competencies:

Demonstrate ability to multi‐task, prioritize, work efficiently and manage confidential information
Practical knowledge of civil construction and mining sites
Ability to assimilate and execute the contents of the companies OHS Management System and Client specific OHS programs
Ability to obtain, analyze, sort, check and verify information
Demonstrate ability to use sound judgment to compile information, identify issues, take appropriate action, or involve others as necessary
Ability to work independently, as well as work effectively in a team environment and collaboratively with other departments
Flexibility to adapt to all situations and work varied hours to accommodate workers on shift work including
Ability to anticipate work needs and follow through with minimum direction
Excellent written, verbal communication, and collaborative skills


Qualifications:

Current CSO or NCSO designation, (COHS designation Preferred)
Extensive knowledgeable of legislative requirements for WorkSafeBC and the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in British Columbia
At least one year of experience in a health and safety role in the province of British Columbia within the last 3 years
2‐years hands‐on Safety experience in the construction industry with preference to civil construction and mining
Post‐secondary education in administration, business, construction related trades or healthcare is an asset
Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power‐point, Outlook)
Experience in large scale earthworks, underground pipe works, and earth‐fill/sand cell dam experience an asset
Proven working experience in technical writing of Health and Safety
