Job Description Summary
The Welder & Fabricator is a key member of the manufacturing team who is responsible for production welding, fabrication, and quality craftsmanship. This position is actively and safely engaged in the production of metal above-ground storage tanks by preparing materials, welding, cutting, grinding, and cleaning of metal surfaces. This position has direct input on the fabrication processes of assembly, design interpretations, material selection, and utilization of shop-level drawings.
- Promote a safety culture with zero tolerance for violations and full accountability for all employees to report unsafe practices and behaviors.
- Set-up welding machines based on the job at hand and connecting cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, as specified by standards or specifications.
- Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.
- Understands and applies welding techniques; work quickly and skillfully with the hands; accept responsibility for the work performed; visualize what the finished product should look like; operate welding equipment with skill.
- Sets and promotes high standards of personal performance. Striving for quality of work, putting forth extra effort to ensure quality work with limited to no rework.
- Capable of welding in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
- Selects torch, torch tip, filler ford and flux, according to welding chart specifications or type and thickness of material.
- Positions and clamps workpieces together or assembles them in jig or fixtures.
- Rolls, cuts, and breaks steel pieces as necessary.
- Ability to perform simple shop math, convert decimals to fractional equivalents.
- Chips and grinds off excess weld, slag, and spatter. Cleans or de-greases parts.
- Daily proper cleaning and maintenance of equipment or if per the manufacturer’s recommendations if more stringent.
- Make suggestions and constructive criticism to leadership, clients, personnel of service department, other Acterra Group departments and initiate a dialogue to promote understanding, problem solving, and positive change.
- Promote and maintain good morale and comradery within Manufacturing through group and individual communication and interactions.
- Reads, interprets, and marks materials according to shop level drawings and specifications.
- All other duties as assigned.
- These specific accountabilities are tied to this position’s performance management.
- Highschool diploma or GED.
- One to three years of welding or fabricating metal products.
- Certified Welder through the American Welding Society (AWS) is preferred (3G).
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, design build drawings and procedure manuals.
