Brief Description
The Vice President of Operations oversees the performance of the construction divisions, providing leadership, support, and accountability within reporting teams. Setting strategic goals, fostering ethical leadership, and driving Petra's growth. Collaborating with the President and peers to ensure profitability and operational efficiency while focusing on continuous improvement, innovation, and adopting new technologies.
Working Relationships
This position will report directly to and collaborate closely with the President. Overseeing and partnering closely with the Regional Superintendent (RS), Director of Construction (DOC), Concrete Division, Small Projects Division (SPD) and the Director of Estimating. Additionally, they will collaborate and partner with all Departmental Leadership including Business Development, Finance, Risk and Safety, and Human Resources. Petra is headquartered in Meridian, Idaho with additional offices in Redmond, Washington and Denver, Colorado. This role will travel as needed to collaborate and engage with all locations.
Key Accountabilities•Design and oversee the Construction Operations Department's organizational structure, staffing recommendations, and succession planning to ensure qualified leaders for key roles.
•Coach, mentor, and develop direct reports, providing training, performance feedback, and conflict resolution to support their growth.
•Establish and communicate departmental goals that align with Petra’s Vision and Mission, fostering a unified team focus.
•Oversee P&L for all Operations Divisions, develop business strategies, and create annual plans with SMART goals in alignment with company objectives.
•Collaborate with department colleagues to ensure accurate forecasts, budgets, and financial reporting, while supporting project budget reviews and strategic recommendations.
•Establish KPIs to measure operational efficiency, report on performance, and analyze business conditions to drive continuous improvement and alignment with Petra’s Vision, Mission, and Core Values.
•Oversee Estimating to ensure accurate, profitable estimates and budget accuracy, adding value to customers through preconstruction services.
•Provide technical oversight to construction activities, ensuring efficient processes, cost-effectiveness, and alignment with project success standards (safety, schedule, profitability, customer relationships).
•Partner with Risk Management, Finance, DOC, and RS to manage project risks, ensure safety goals are met, and address major incidents, while contributing to Petra’s Safety culture and annual safety initiatives.
•Implement personalized development plans for direct reports, focusing on strengthening technical expertise and leadership abilities to build a high-performing team.
•Establish and enforce policies and guidelines to drive operational excellence while continuously reviewing and recommending process improvements.
•Review with Finance and Risk Management to ensure proper insurance coverage for effective operational risk management.
•Partner with the DOC, RS, and Risk Management to stay informed on changing regulations, legal issues, and litigation, ensuring policies remain current and compliant.
•Build and maintain strong relationships with key community stakeholders and clients, representing Petra at local events to enhance visibility as an industry leader.
•Team up with Business Development to identify opportunities, and support proposal and presentation preparation.
•Connect with DOC, Risk Management, and Finance to negotiate major contracts with clients, vendors, and contractors to maximize cost savings.
Requirements
Education And Experience
•Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Engineering, or related field, or relevant work experience.
•10 years of experience in executive leadership positions in the construction or manufacturing industries.
•5 years of experience leading teams and building consensus.
•Comprehensive knowledge of the nuances of the construction industry including but not limited to contracts, inspections, materials, standards, ordering, scheduling, budgeting, cost tracking, safety, and pitfall mitigation.
•Preferred construction finance and accounting experience.
•Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and project management software.
•Proficiency in/or knowledge of Sage, TimberScan, and Procore.

Working Environment
•This position requires prolonged periods of sitting while working on the computer.
•Works indoors in an office setting with moderate noise levels and near others; frequent interactions with others.
