Job Description:

Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a Surveyor Technician to join our Corporate Services & Communications team. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. What does a Surveyor Technician do for us?

As part of the land survey function under the supervision of a Professional Land Surveyor, this individual provides company-wide survey support on linear projects (transmission and distribution) and site projects (generation, substations, and facilities). They perform office support tasks including research, post-processing of survey data, and drafting. Additionally, they also perform field work as part of a two-person field crew or independently, operating Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and traditional survey equipment.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE


Knowledge of:

- Civil drafting principles

- Survey field support practices

- Legal Principles in Surveying

- State Plane, UTM, and Geographic Coordinate system transformations


Preferred:

- Electric utility line design, construction, and mapping techniques

- Legal descriptions and easements


Skills in:

- AutoCAD or Autodesk Map software

- Personal computer use and maintenance

- Microsoft Windows applications

- Highly skilled in file management

- Effective oral and written communication

- Strong customer service skills


Preferred:

- Land survey instruments and global positioning system (GPS) technologies

- Algebra and trigonometry

- Autodesk Civil 3D software

- Plotter and scanner technologies

- Computer network operations


Ability to:

- Make decisions and solve problems

- Basic math

- Understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions

- Work independently for extended periods


Preferred:

- Read and understand construction drawings and plat, feeder, and work order maps


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS


Education:

- Associate’s degree in land surveying or computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) technology with emphasis in land or civil drafting, or other related degree


OR

- Related training (i.e. NSPS certified survey technician program) and 2 years of experience as a survey party chief


Preferred:

- Bachelor's Degree in geomatics, land surveying, or civil engineering with an emphasis in land surveying, or another related degree


OR

- An equivalent combination of training and 4 years of experience as a survey party chief


Experience:

- 3 years of experience as a member or leader of a field survey crew, including 1 year of experience in survey or civil drafting

- Capable of performing independent (solo) field work using GNSS and traditional survey instruments and post-processing survey data


Preferred:

- 5 years of experience as a member or leader of a field survey crew

- 2 years of experience in survey or civil drafting


Licenses & Certifications:

- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position


Preferred:

- Certification as a Land Survey Intern or ability to obtain Professional Land Surveyor license within 1 year

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, squat, crouch, climb, twist, kneel and stand for long periods of time. Access survey locations over uneven terrain such as hills, mountains, rocks, structures and over fences. Lift and carry survey and GPS equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. 25% of work will be performed outdoors in a variety of adverse weather conditions including extreme heat and cold, snow, mud, dust and high winds. There will be walking at extreme grades, steep hillsides and valleys. Perform the essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat of harm to self, others or property. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Job is primarily in an office setting utilizing technical surveying expertise validating quality of survey work along with occasional field survey work; Work outdoors in various weather conditions hiking and carrying equipment; Travel to various locations throughout the company service territory to provide support services which may require occasional overnight travel; Occasionally perform duties outside of the normal working hours.

Temporary employees are eligible to apply for internal job postings. In order for your current position to be held for your return, qualified employees must have supervisory approval to participate and have been in their current position for at least six months.
