Position Overview:
We are seeking a Working Paint Department Supervisor to lead and actively participate in our structural steel painting operations. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for running the department while also performing surface preparation and coating application alongside the team. The ideal candidate brings an operations mindset and isn’t afraid to jump in to keep production moving.
- Lead daily operations of the paint department, including scheduling, workflow coordination, and team direction
- Actively perform blasting, surface preparation, and paint/coating application as needed
- Set the pace for productivity, quality, and safety by working alongside the team
- Train, mentor, and develop paint personnel to improve skill level and efficiency
- Coordinate with fabrication, production, and shipping teams to meet deadlines
- Ensure all work meets project specifications, coating requirements, and quality standards
- Maintain organization of the paint yard and work areas for efficiency and safety
- Monitor and manage inventory of paints, coatings, and supplies
- Enforce safety protocols and environmental compliance standards
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase throughput and reduce rework- 3–7+ years of experience in structural steel or industrial painting
- Proven experience in a lead, foreman, or supervisory role
- Strong hands-on experience with blasting, surface prep, and coating application
- Ability to read and interpret shop drawings and project specifications
- Operations-focused mindset with strong organizational and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of OSHA safety standards and best practices
- Strong leadership and communication skills with a team-first mentality
- Experience in a structural steel fabrication environment
- Familiarity with American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) standards and how coatings integrate with fabrication quality requirements
- Experience working in an AISC-certified shop environment
- Forklift and/or overhead crane experience (or willingness to be trained)
