Position Overview:
Northwest Environmental is seeking a Staff Accountant to join our finance team. Reporting to the Assistant Comptroller, this mid-level role is responsible for preparing financial statements, driving month-end close activities, performing account analyses, and supporting budgeting and audit processes. The Staff Accountant ensures the integrity of our financial data and helps streamline reporting for both internal management and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
•Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow) for management and client reporting.
•Lead the month-end close process: Generate and post complex journal entries (accruals, prepaids, allocations).
•Reconcile general ledger accounts and investigate variances.
•Perform detailed account analyses, identify trends or anomalies, and recommend corrective actions.
•Assist with annual budgeting and periodic forecasting: Gather budget inputs, build financial models, and track actuals vs. budget.
•Support audit and tax engagements by preparing schedules, answering inquiries, and assembling work-paper documentation.
•Maintain and enhance internal controls over financial processes; document processes and update procedure manuals.
•Oversee accounts payable and receivable escalations: resolve billing disputes, approve invoices, and validate cash applications.
•Collaborate on process‐improvement initiatives—leverage technology (ERP, Excel) to automate recurring tasks.
•Prepare ad-hoc financial analyses and management reports (e.g., variance analyses, KPI dashboards).
Experience and Skills:
•Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
•3–5 years of progressive accounting experience in a corporate or public accounting environment.
•Strong knowledge of GAAP and accrual accounting principles.
•Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, XLOOKUP) and proficiency with ERP/accounting software (e.g., NetSuite, QuickBooks).
•Experience preparing financial statements and supporting external audits.
•Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
•Effective verbal and written communication; able to present findings clearly to finance leadership.
•High attention to detail, integrity in handling confidential data, and the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
•Self-starter who works well both independently and as part of a collaborative finance team.
