Meteorology Analyst Sr

Salary Grade: G05 Minimum Midpoint Maximum $94,831 - $128,022 - $161,213

This position is covered by NERC CIP cyber security standards. Prior to being hired, promoted, or transferred into the position, the candidate must successfully pass a Personnel Risk Assessment, which includes identity verification and a criminal background check. Prior to being granted unescorted access to cyber secure areas, the candidate must attend cyber security training. Annual cyber security training is also required.

SUMMARY:

Provides meteorological expertise and forecasting services to support utility operations, with primary focus on renewable energy forecasting, wildfire risk assessment, and load forecasting support. Integrates meteorological data to provide continuously updated weather information to better manage the impacts of weather on the electric system and identify vulnerabilities. Monitors and reports real-time weather conditions and expected forecasts on a recurring basis during weather events and major operational events.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides daily operational weather forecasts and Fire Potential Index.

Monitors company-owned weather stations and ensure successful data collection

Prepares and disseminate non-routine operational weather reports during significant weather events

Participates in internal staff meetings for safety and fire preparedness planning

Collaborates with engineering and standards teams to integrate weather risk assessments into utility design standards

Supports emergency response planning with real-time weather updates and impact projections

Contributes to power generation and distribution optimization by integrating weather forecasts into load demand models

Monitors and evaluate the performance of weather-resilient infrastructure post-event

Participates in tabletop exercises, after-action reviews, and incident debriefs.

Delivers daily and event-driven fire weather briefings including Fire Potential Index and fire behavior assessments

Supports PSPS decision-making with real-time fire weather analysis

Manages meteorological field programs for internal utility clients

Provides leadership during severe storm and fire weather events

Manages complex projects with increasing value (>$25,000)

Provides leadership and guidance to the meteorology team; may supervise junior meteorologists.

Advanced project management and leadership responsibilities.

COMPENTENCIES:

Demonstrates ability to analyze and interpret meteorological data for infrastructure impact assessments, outage risk modeling, and renewable energy forecasting.

Shows expertise in integrating and updating weather data to support operational decisions and situational awareness.

Exhibits skill in monitoring fire weather models, satellite imagery, and forecasts to identify and communicate wildfire risks.

Applies understanding of temperature and climate modeling to support load forecasting, seasonal outlooks, and long-term planning.

Possesses knowledge of advanced grid technologies and climate trends to advise on infrastructure resilience and mitigation strategies.

Demonstrates ability to develop decision support tools, visualization platforms, and multi-period climate outlooks using atmospheric and GIS models.

Shows expertise in coordinating with internal teams and external agencies to ensure consistent fire weather messaging and emergency planning.

Exhibits skill in educating teams on fire weather dynamics and contributing subject matter expertise to resilience strategies.

Demonstrates effective communication of weather-related risks and recommendations to diverse stakeholders.

Applies understanding of fire weather behavior and forecasting to support PSPS decisions and emergency response efforts.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelors degree (B.S.) in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or related Physical Science from a four-year college or university with 5-7 years.

Relevant experience supporting electric utilities (renewable energy forecasting, wildfire meteorology, measurement systems, weather analysis, meteorological IT).

Masters degree preferred.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex meteorological data, technical documents, and governmental regulations. Ability to write weather reports, technical correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present weather information and respond to questions from operations personnel, executives, and emergency response teams. Ability to clearly communicate weather-risks to the business during storms and other emergency events.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Advanced ability to apply mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, and statistical analysis related to meteorological modeling and forecasting. Ability to interpret complex meteorological models and create weather-related forecasts for renewable energy and load predictions.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Proficient knowledge of meteorological software platforms, database management, advanced spreadsheet analysis, and familiarity with renewable energy forecasting systems. Experience with weather visualization tools, GIS applications, and meteorological data processing systems.

ANALYSIS AND PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITY:

Ability to solve complex meteorological problems and deal with a variety of weather-related variables in operational situations. Ability to interpret meteorological models and deal with multiple atmospheric variables simultaneously. Works in a fast-paced environment and adapts quickly to emerging weather events.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to sit up to 2/3 of the time and to stand, walk, and stoop up to 1/3 of the time. Good vision and ability to adjust focus is required for monitoring weather displays and data. Manual dexterity is required for computer operations. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Primarily office environment with occasional visits to field sites, weather stations, and generating facilities. May require 24/7 on-call availability during severe weather events and wildfire conditions. Supports the 365 day/year operational weather office with operational forecast support. May require travel to various company locations and meteorological conferences.
