THE POSITION
The Senior Solutions Architect plays a critical role in translating business needs into well‑designed, practical solution architectures that enable successful delivery. Working closely with product owners, delivery teams, and technical specialists, this role focuses on designing and guiding business system architectures that are fit‑for‑purpose, secure, resilient, and aligned with established enterprise standards and target states.
This role operates primarily at the solution and initiative level, ensuring that individual projects and products are designed coherently, integrate effectively with the broader ecosystem, and support intended business outcomes. The Senior Solutions Architect acts as a trusted advisor within delivery teams, helping teams navigate complexity, trade‑offs, and constraints while accelerating sound architectural decisions.
The Senior Solutions Architect provides hands‑on architectural leadership across solutions, spanning applications, data flows, integrations, and enabling infrastructure considerations. They collaborate with data and infrastructure architects, ensuring designs are feasible, scalable, and aligned with organizational direction while remaining grounded in delivery realities.
Responsibilities Scope of Activities
The Senior Solutions Architect will demonstrate competencies across four key dimensions:
Guide Delivery & Enable Execution
- Partners with delivery teams to design and resolve complex solution architecture challenges throughout implementation.
- Translates business and technical requirements into clear solution architectures, documenting designs, options analysis, trade‑offs, risks, and key decisions.
- Supports teams through architecture spikes, design workshops, and critical delivery trade‑off decisions, balancing time‑to‑market, cost, risk, and long‑term sustainability.
- Works closely with product teams to ensure solution designs support current needs while enabling a sustainable architectural runway across the product lifecycle.
- Understands business drivers and business capabilities (current and future state), shaping solution designs and change requirements that deliver targeted business outcomes.
- Acts as a trusted architectural advisor and coach within agile and hybrid delivery models, providing hands‑on guidance and design assurance.
Example deliverables: Solution architecture designs, architectural decision records (ADRs), business process and capability impact assessments, design workshop outputs.
- Assess Technology
- Maintains a high-level understanding of the enterprise application, data, integration, and infrastructure landscape to support informed and contextual architectural decision-making.
- Provides architectural input and impact analysis to support product managers in investment, modernization, and end-of-life decisions for applications, technologies, processes, and information.
- Monitors emerging technology trends and disruptions and assesses their practical application to enable new and evolving business and operating models.
- Identifies and frames opportunities for proof-of-concept initiatives to evaluate emerging technologies, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards, target architectures, and long-term value.
- Analyzes technology industry, competitor, and market trends to determine their potential implications for solution and platform strategies.
- Supports the evaluation and selection of software products and services by contributing to standards definition, total cost of ownership analysis, and architectural fit assessments.
- Provides consultative architectural guidance to application and infrastructure initiatives, reviewing designs and advising on alignment with enterprise principles and standards.
Example deliverables: Current-state architecture documentation, technology assessments, cost/benefit analysis contributions, POC evaluations.
- Apply Technology
- Leads the evaluation, design, and analysis of solution architectures across one or more related solutions, products, or initiatives based on enterprise strategy, value streams, business requirements, and standards.
- Develops and maintains roadmaps for the evolution of solution portfolios from current to future state, identifying key dependencies, integration patterns, and sequencing considerations.
- Creates architectural designs and reference architectures to guide and contextualize solution development across products, services, projects, and systems.
- Works with Project and Product Managers to provide architectural assurance that solution designs and implementation plans align with approved architectures, target states, and stated outcomes.
- Identifies and manages architectural dependencies and integration considerations across solutions to promote reuse, scalability, and consistency across the enterprise.
- Builds architecture capability within delivery teams through coaching, design reviews, and active contribution to architecture communities of practice.

- Provide Enterprise Guidance
- Contributes to the development and continuous improvement of architecture principles, standards, and patterns by providing solution‑level insight and delivery feedback.
- Applies reference architectures and standards when designing solutions, and provides feedback on their practicality and effectiveness.
- Participates in architecture governance and assurance processes by supporting design reviews and documenting compliance considerations.
- Actively contributes to architecture communities of practice, promoting alignment between delivery teams and enterprise architecture direction.
- Provides input into architectural health discussions by identifying solution‑level technical debt, integration risks, and sustainability concerns.
Example deliverables: Architecture principles and standards, solution scorecards, enterprise reference architecture components, architectural health assessments.
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, engineering, system analysis or a related study, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of fifteen (15) years of hands-on experience in at least two (2) IT solution development disciplines, supported by broader understanding across other domains, such as technical or infrastructure architecture, network management, application development, middleware, database management, or cloud development.
- Demonstrated exposure to multiple, diverse technologies, platforms and processing environments.
- Good understanding of strategic and emerging technology trends, and the practical application of existing and emerging technologies to new and evolving business and operating models.
- Good understanding of product management, agile principles and development methodologies and capability of supporting teams by providing advice and guidance on opportunities, impact and risks, taking account of technical and architectural debt.
- Demonstrated ability to translate future-state business capabilities and requirements into solution architecture requirements, including developing blueprints, strategies and roadmaps.
- Ability to articulate new ideas and concepts to technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Skilled at understanding the long-term ("big picture") and short-term perspectives of situations.
- Ability to propose and estimate the financial impact of solution architecture alternatives.
- Effective interpersonal skills to work creatively and analytically for solving business problems and propose solutions
- Apt at quickly comprehending the functions and capabilities of new technologies.
- Technology neutral: remains unbiased toward any specific technology or vendor choice and is more interested in results than personal preferences.
- Motivated and driven by achieving long-term business outcomes.
- Experience working in the midstream and/or energy industry is preferred but not required.
