GEI Consultants is seeking an experienced Senior Materials Testing & Inspection Technician to support our materials testing and inspection team on a wide range of projects across Ontario. The successful candidate will be involved in field and laboratory testing, construction inspection, documentation, and coordination with project teams.
This role is based out of GEI’s Barrie office and includes regular full-time hours (40 hours per week). The position offers the opportunity to work closely with engineers, project managers, and technical staff while contributing to the delivery of high-quality geotechnical, environmental, and hydrogeological engineering services.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Perform compaction testing using a nuclear densometer for engineered fill, bedding, backfill, granular base and sub-base, and asphalt.
- Conduct sampling of soils, granular materials, and asphalt for laboratory testing.
- Perform on-site concrete testing and sampling.
- Carry out subgrade, foundation (shallow and deep), and reinforcing steel inspections.
- Conduct geotechnical laboratory testing, including water content determinations and hydrometer analyses.
- Conduct materials laboratory testing, including Proctor testing, granular sieve analyses, and concrete testing.
- Prepare clear and accurate field inspection and testing reports.
- Communicate field observations and test results with contractors, project managers, and supervisors.
- Maintain testing and inspection equipment in good working condition and ensure calibration requirements are met.
- Provide general CAD drafting support, as required.
- Work in compliance with project-specific health and safety requirements.
- College diploma in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant materials testing and inspection experience preferred.
- Strong ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Well organized, dependable, and detail-oriented.
- Physically capable of performing field and laboratory work.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for travel to project sites.
- Willingness and ability to work out of town when required.
- Flexibility to work varying shifts, schedules, and weekends on short notice.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to changing site conditions and priorities.
- Ability to follow instructions, learn new procedures, and apply guidance from supervisors.
