We’re hiring a hands-on Scrap Yard Manager to lead daily yard operations, safety, and a growing team.
The Scrapyard Manager is responsible for the safe, efficient, and profitable operation of the yard. This person supervises staff, enforces safety and environmental compliance, manages inventory and inbound/outbound logistics, coordinates maintenance and equipment, and serves as the on-site point of contact for customers and vendors.
- Manage daily operations of the scrap yard, ensuring efficient workflow and productivity.
- Lead, coach, and schedule yard staff (truck drivers, loaders, scale operators).
- Oversee daily yard operations: receiving, sorting, processing, storage and shipping of scrap commodities.
- Ensure accurate documentation: weight tickets, bills of lading, manifests, and daily reports; submit paperwork to office/Supervisor on time.
- Maintain regulatory compliance (OSHA, environmental spill prevention, local permitting); enforce PPE and safety procedures.
- Manage equipment uptime—coordinate preventative maintenance, repairs and vendor services.
- Control inventory and commodity segregation (aluminum, copper, radiators, wire, iron, etc.).
- Monitor operational KPIs (production, throughput, shrinkage, downtime) and report to senior management.
- Resolve customer issues on-site and promote excellent customer service.
- Enforce company policies, investigate incidents, and complete required documentation.
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, performance reviews and disciplinary actions.
- Maintain yard security and loss-prevention practices.
- Minimum 3–5 years supervisory experience in a heavy-equipment, recycling, materials-handling, or industrial environment.
- Strong knowledge of scrap commodities and yard operations.
- Proven leadership skills with ability to manage performance and build a positive team culture.
- Excellent communication and customer-service skills.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred but not required (company will note if CDL required for specific roles).
- Forklift certification is preferred; experience in materials handling is essential.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to lead a diverse team effectively.
- Ability to pass background check and pre-employment drug screen.
- Physically able to work outdoors, climb, bend, and lift frequently (up to company-specified limits).
- Experience with scales / weight ticket procedures and basic accounting or inventory control.
- Forklift, loader, or heavy equipment operation experience/certification.
- Familiarity with DOT/FMCSR, environmental reporting, or hazardous-materials handling (as applicable).
- Prior experience in scrap metal, recycling, or waste industry.
