Primary Purpose: Responsible for safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities on assigned route. Operate a school bus that transports students with disabilities and other authorized personnel to and from schools or designated locations. Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

● Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B) with appropriate endorsements School bus driver certification Special Knowledge/Skills:

● Must be 21 years of age

● Ability to pass alcohol and drug tests

● Ability to pass the state required physical examination for school bus driver

● Ability to complete required school bus driver safety training

● Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

● Ability to communicate effectively

● Ability to work well with children with disabilities

● Ability to enforce student discipline procedures

● Ability to manage student behavior

● Acceptable driving record

● Ability to operate school bus

● Assist students on and off the bus, including the use of wheelchair lifts, safety belts, and harnesses.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

● One-year experience as school bus driver

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Vehicle Operation:

● Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.

● Drive school bus to and from extracurricular activities.

● Check school bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs. Complete required report.

Records/Reports:

● Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, mechanical failure, and complete required reports.

● Ensure proper documentation of any medical alerts, emergency contact info, or loading/unloading instructions.

● Maintain current list of students and current route description.

● Sweep school bus and empty trash can on a daily basis.

● Keep school bus fueled. Have bus fueled when fuel level drops to 1/2 tank.

Student Management:

● Learn and adapt to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.

● Supervise students as they board and leave school bus and cross street.

● Work closely with bus aides, teachers, therapists, and parents to ensure continuity of care and behavior expectations.

● Exercise student management through correct use of communication and discipline and report discipline problems to school officials using a written referral form. Never use profanity.

● Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.

Safety:

● Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.

● Inspect school bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, steering, etc. to ensure it can be operated safely before driving.

● Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, fuses, and triangle reflectors.

● Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not immediately correctable.

● Report any hazardous conditions along scheduled routes.

● Report any accident involving the bus to the Director of transportation immediately. Submit all required reports to the Director within 24 hours following an accident.

● Must be physically able to climb in and out of the school bus emergency door to evacuate the bus in an emergency.

Other:

● Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office according to established guidelines.

● Work irregular hours as needed.

● Attend and complete required training program to maintain certification status. Includes safety and in-service meetings.

● Conduct work in a manner consistent with Texas Hazard Communication Act

● Conduct work in a manner consistent with guidelines for Pathogen handling.

● Work irregular hours as needed.

● Maintain Confidentiality.

● Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Tools/Equipment Used: School bus or light van, wheelchair lift and ramp, locks, seatbelts, harnesses, car seats, special adaptive equipment, safety equipment such as roof hatches, fire extinguisher, reflective triangles and jumper cables.

Posture: Prolonged sitting. Occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling and twisting Motion: Prolonged driving; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching

Lifting: Frequent heavy lifting (45 pounds or over) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting nonambulatory students, and lifting and moving adaptive equipment on a daily basis

Environment: Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases); work around moving vehicles; regularly work irregular hours, and occasionally work prolonged hours

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress
