The Purchasing Agent is responsible for sourcing and procuring raw materials, components, and services necessary for the manufacturing of steel storage tanks. This role involves negotiating with suppliers, managing inventory levels, ensuring timely delivery of materials, and coordinating with the production team to maintain efficient workflow.
Role and Responsibilities
Material Sourcing & Planning
•Identify and source steel, coatings, fasteners, and other components used in the production of steel storage tanks.
•Evaluate suppliers based on price, quality, service, and reliability.
•Negotiate terms with suppliers to ensure cost-effective procurement.
•Manage long-term supplier relationships to ensure consistent material availability and quality.
•Review MRP daily and issue RFQ’s and PO’s per company Policies and regulations.
Inventory Management
•Assist the Material handler Supervisor in reviewing system inventory levels of raw materials and components, ensuring optimal stock without overstocking.
•Coordinate with the production team to forecast material requirements based on project schedules and demand.
•Track shipments and manage delivery schedules to avoid delays in the production process.
Supplier Relations & Compliance
•Maintain strong working relationships with suppliers and address any issues related to quality, delivery, or pricing.
•Ensure all materials purchased meet the required specifications, safety standards, and quality expectations.
•Assist in vendor audits and ensure supplier compliance with company policies and industry regulations.
Cost Management & Budgeting
•Work with the finance department to establish and adhere to budget limits for procurement activities.
•Identify opportunities for cost-saving without compromising quality or lead time.
•Track purchasing expenses and provide regular reports to management on procurement activities.
Cross-Department Collaboration
•Liaise with engineering, production, and quality control teams to ensure materials meet production needs.
•Collaborate with the warehouse team to manage the receiving, storage, and distribution of raw materials.
•Support new product development initiatives by sourcing materials that meet project specifications.
Qualifications
•Associate’s degree in business administration, supply chain management class, or a related material management related field.
•3-5 years of purchasing experience in the steel, manufacturing, or heavy industry. Experience in steel storage tank manufacturing is a plus.
•Strong negotiation and vendor management skills.
•Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
•Proficient in ERP systems and Microsoft Office Suite
•Analytical mindset with attention to detail.
•Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Hours:
Monday - Friday
7:00am - 4:00pm
Work Environment
This position operates in a manufacturing environment with occasional exposure to the shop floor, where safety protocols must be followed. The role may also involve travel to visit suppliers.
