About This Job

We’re looking for an Electrical Substation Physical Design Engineer to support high-voltage substation layout and equipment design from concept through construction. This role is open at both the Engineer II and Senior Engineer levels, depending on experience. You’ll lead or support the technical execution of substation projects across the country, with a focus on safe, cost-effective, and code-compliant designs.

What You’ll Do:

- Design physical layout plans for 13kV–500kV substations, including equipment location, cable routing, grounding, conduit, and buswork

- Perform calculations for grounding systems, lightning protection, clearances, and bus ratings

- Select and specify high-voltage equipment such as transformers, breakers, switches, and structures

- Coordinate closely with civil/structural, protection & control, and SCADA engineers for cross-disciplinary alignment

- Develop construction drawings, BOMs, and design documentation using AutoCAD or MicroStation

- Support or lead internal design reviews and provide QA/QC feedback on project deliverables

- Conduct site walks, field verifications, and constructability reviews to validate designs

- Interpret and apply standards from IEEE, NEC, NESC, ANSI, and utility-specific requirements

- Assist in proposals by defining scope, estimating hours, and identifying deliverables

- Track project progress and communicate risks or design changes to leadership

- Review vendor drawings and peer deliverables for quality and consistency

- Reinforce safety awareness in meetings, planning, and design activities

- Mentor junior engineers and ensure adherence to internal quality standards

The Experience We’re Looking For:

- Engineer III: 5–8 years of substation physical design experience, with some mentoring included

- Senior Engineer: 8+ years of physical substation design with project leadership responsibilities

- Expertise in high-voltage layout, grounding, lightning protection, and clearance planning

- Comfort working with utilities, developers, EPC firms, and interconnection regulations

- Experience interpreting PJM, ERCOT, MISO, or other regional operator standards

- Strong AutoCAD or MicroStation skills

- Ability to manage multiple projects, resolve layout conflicts, and work independently

- Strong technical writing, verbal communication, and client interaction skills

Additional Requirements:

- A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering

- Valid U.S. driver’s license with a clean driving record

- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening

- Willingness to travel up to 75% across the continental U.S.

Bonus Points for:

- Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field

- PLS-CADD familiarity

- EIT or PE licensure

- Experience in training or mentoring junior engineers and leading multidisciplinary teams

- Knowledge of RMS Energy clients, standards, or design review processes

We welcome applications from qualified candidates, including those who may require visa sponsorship to work in the United States.
