This role is responsible for conducting regular inspections of all plant equipment related to both diesel and hydro generation. The technician ensures proper operation, identifies and reports faults or malfunctions, completes minor to major mechanical repairs and routine maintenance, and operates units as needed. Additionally, responsibilities include performing administrative tasks such as preparing work reports, ordering parts and fuel, processing paperwork, and verifying invoices for accuracy before submitting them for approval and payment.
- Handles routine tasks, including cleaning, monitoring equipment performance, changing fluids, replacing filters, and adjusting valves.
- Starts, synchronizes, and stops generating units to support distribution and regulate power flow; assists in troubleshooting during system testing and commissioning.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose problems (faults, failures, deficiencies) on site and remotely with SCADA, analyzes problems, corrects issues.
- Conducts mechanical maintenance across multiple sites, including turbine bearing service, engine controller troubleshooting, fuel pump replacement, pipework modifications, exchanger cleaning, and HVAC repairs.
- Assists with major overhauls on turbines and engines and interfaces with contractors and engineers.
- Performs preventative and predictive maintenance tasks such as oil analysis, vibration monitoring, and thermography.
- Documents deficiencies and completed work, maintains equipment histories, and completes month-end metering and fuel delivery reports.
- Coordinates external contractors and temporary employees hired to do snow removal, vegetation management, fuel delivery, etc.
- Conducts orientations, issues work permits and isolations (lock-out tag-out) to contractors and internal personnel. Identifies and corrects unsafe working conditions.
- Prepares job plans in accordance with procedures and manuals, and updates Centralized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) with status, schedule, and as-left/found reports.
- Provides input to and recommends changes to maintenance standards and procedures.
- Handles paperwork for purchasing, receiving, invoice accuracy, and payment approval. Assists with inventory, critical spares, and vendor coordination.
- Adherence to the Safety Standard Manual and Environmental Management System.
- Assists to investigate and prepare loss control reports as per Incident Management Procedure.
- Ability to travel by road or air to remote locations as necessary.
- Participates in all mandatory safety training in up to date this includes Driver Training, WHIMS, TDG, and First-Aid.
- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) is required.
- A provincial trade certificate in Heavy Duty Mechanics, Millwright or other similar trade is required.
- Valid Operator’s license for the vehicles to be operated is required.
- Valid First Aid Certificate with CPR certification.
- Extensive knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems and components.
- An aptitude for mechanics, manual dexterity, and the ability to use hand tools.
- Ability to understand and follow Yukon Electrical policies, procedures and safety standards.
