The Operations Manager / Shop Manager is to oversee the daily operations of our machine and fabrication shop in North Salt Lake, Utah. Our diverse capabilities include manual/CNC machining, welding, custom fabrication, hydraulic cylinder repair, pump and gearbox overhauls, and general industrial equipment repair.
The Operations Manager is responsible for managing and leading the production teams—including machinists, fabricators, and mechanics/technicians—ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. This role also provides leadership and direction to a Production Coordinator, who manages day-to-day scheduling and work order flow.
This role requires deep technical knowledge of machining, fabrication, industrial repair, strong leadership and communication skills, and a firm grasp of job costing, profitability, and shop productivity. This is a hands-on, shop focused role which requires excellent judgement and adept problem solving skills. - Lead and mentor shop supervisors and team members across machining, welding, fabrication, hydraulic, and mechanical repair departments.
- Provide oversight and guidance to the Production Coordinator, who manages scheduling and job flow.
- Build upon a culture of accountability, communication, and teamwork.

- Responsible for hiring, training, mentoring, and holding supervisors and team members accountable.
- Oversee workflow across multiple departments: precision machining, fabrication, hydraulic repair, and mechanical assembly.
- Support and coordinate with the Production Coordinator to prioritize work orders based on deadlines, material availability, and shop capacity.
- Troubleshoot technical issues on the floor and provide solutions that maintain quality and efficiency.
- Monitor and support specialized work on hydraulic cylinders, gearboxes, pumps, and other industrial equipment.
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, purchasing, and customers regularly.
- Manage labor utilization, job costing, rework rates, and operational profitability.
- Drive continuous improvement in productivity, quality, and on-time delivery.
- Recommend and manage capital investments in equipment, tooling, and shop resources.
- Track KPIs, generate performance reports, and provide insight to ownership on operational status and challenges.
- Ensure all jobs are performed to drawing specifications, tolerances, and quality expectations.
- Support machinists and technicians with setup, tooling, and technical interpretation of blueprints and CAD files.
- Collaborate with engineering and quality teams to resolve discrepancies or improve manufacturability.
- Enforce shop standards and implement best practices for hydraulic and mechanical component rebuilds.
- Oversee the ISO quality program implementation and execution to meet company goals.
- Ensure the shop is properly staffed, trained, and resourced to meet production demand.
- Coordinate with purchasing, engineering, and inventory personnel to reduce downtime and material shortages.
- Take ownership of workforce planning, including hiring, performance reviews, training, and disciplinary actions.
-10+ years of experience in shop or operations management within machining, fabrication, or industrial service environments.
- Deep knowledge of machining, welding, and at least a working knowledge of hydraulic cylinders, pumps, and gearboxes.
- Experience with job shops or custom manufacturing environments.
- Proven leadership skills, with ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage a variety of workflows.
- Strong financial understanding of job costing, shop labor, and quoting impacts.
- Proficiency in production software or ERP systems from quote to cash.
- Able to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and GD&T.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, or Industrial Management.
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and process optimization techniques.
- Experience in ISO 9001 or AISC quality environments.
