Manager, Contractor Safety - Major Projects

Position Summary

The Contractor Safety Manager for Major Projects is responsible for leading the strategic safety oversight of all contracted activities associated with large-scale major capital construction projects. This position provides strategic leadership in developing, implementing, and managing safety policies and programs that align with Company and regulatory requirements. The Manager collaborates with contractors, the third-party construction management firm, and the Major Projects Group (MPG) leadership to create tailored safety initiatives, promote accident prevention, and ensure compliance. This role also partners with other safety groups and regional Safety Managers to address common safety issues and share best practices throughout the organization.

Responsibilities

- Lead Contractor Safety team members, setting team priorities, evaluating oversight necessities, and assessing overall program health.

- Oversee a team which conducts regular site safety visits, inspections, and walkthroughs to identify hazards and verify compliance.

- Facilitate safety meetings with a third-party construction management firm to ensure effective communication between contractors, project teams, and management.

- Act as a liaison in the development, implementation, and evaluation of safety programs for all Major Projects, ensuring programs remain current and compliant.

- Partner with MPG leadership to integrate safety and regulatory compliance into operational strategies.

- Provide guidance and technical expertise to MPG leadership and assist with requests from regulatory agencies in partnership with third-party contractor personnel.

- Develop and maintain effective relationships with the third-party firm, contractors, and consultants to ensure collaborative safety efforts on Major Projects.

- Recruit, retain, and manage a high-performing technical safety staff, establishing clear expectations and fostering professional development.

- Analyze performance data in coordination with the third-party firm to identify trends, root causes, and opportunities for improvement.

- Present regular safety performance updates to MPG leadership and Company leadership.

Minimum Requirements

- College degree in safety, education, business or related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience required.

- Professional certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CUSP (Certified Utility Safety Professional), or CHST (Construction Health and Safety Technician) are desirable.

- Eight years of utility experience or related experience in an industrial environment.

- Five years demonstrated management experience, preferably with contractor oversight required.

- Strong knowledge of OSHA, and other relevant safety regulations.

- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills required.

- Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse & rapidly changing business environment, customer focus, strong communication skills and in depth knowledge of industry regulations.

- Experience engaging with numerous contactors and vendors.

- Strong relationship building skills.

- Managing large scale/major projects.
