The Lead Environmental Compliance Specialist manages the full lifecycle of environmental compliance for Sunoco’s retail fuel sites. This role combines technical UST/AST expertise with strong project management skills to ensure accurate, timely regulatory reporting and data integrity across a multi‑state footprint. Serving as the central coordination point for environmental compliance, this position oversees systems, data, vendors, and cross‑functional communication.
- Manage recurring environmental testing cycles as structured projects, ensuring vendor performance, timely repairs, and compliance with state‑specific deadlines.
- Lead environmental onboarding for new retail locations, ensuring accurate integration of equipment records and historical data into the central database.
- Maintain and audit the Master Fuel Tank Equipment Database to ensure alignment with field conditions.
- Provide support on fuel quality and regulatory issues as needed.
- Serve as subject matter expert on EPA and state UST/AST regulations.
- Manage the Compliance Shared Mailbox, offering technical guidance to Facility Managers, consultants, and regulatory agencies.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, logistics, fuel, IT, or related field; or equivalent experience.
- 8+ years of experience in petroleum fuel or retail operations (regulatory compliance, equipment engineering, construction, or maintenance).- Experience managing high‑volume, recurring deadlines using tools such as Excel, Smartsheet, SAP, ServiceNow, SQL, or similar systems.
- Project management and organizational leadership experience.
- Understanding of system integration principles and structured data formats (JSON, XML, CSV).
- Strong ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence without direct authority.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
- Primarily office‑based environment.
- Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods (up to 50%).
- Occasional overnight travel may be required.
