The main purpose and function of the Product Innovation Laboratory Technician I is to carry out necessary research to establish existing product performance characteristics and assist the Innovation Laboratory Supervisor in refining existing product performance and creating new products to meet defined sales and marketing goals and objectives.

- Testing of crude (raw) bentonite samples, samples of bentonite products including drilling fluids, grouts, sealants and animal litter, product ingredient chemicals, non-bentonite chemical products, samples of industrial wastewater and other customer samples and materials for product-focused applications.

- Provide Laboratory Supervisor with reports detailing results of testing including analysis of results when appropriate.

- Maintain documentation of sample and product testing results and product refinement and creation research.

- Collaborate with other lab personnel in gathering and analyzing information and communicating test data and analyses.

- Ensure adherence to company processes and procedures, as well as compliance with industry standards and best practices, and governmental laws and regulations.

- Operate and routinely maintain laboratory test equipment. Identify problems when equipment fails and conduct recommended repairs.

- Support and participate in the organization’s Continual Improvement Program and Quality Management System.

- Maintains knowledge in developing trends and technologies in the industry.

- Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

- Associate degree preferred, or equivalent experience. A focus on Chemistry, Geology, or Mineralogy (especially Clay Mineralogy) preferred.

Experience:

- Experience working in a soils, geological or chemical laboratory environment is highly desirable.

Knowledge and Skills:

- Problem solving skills: ability to identify causes of problems, execute solutions and document the issue; escalate to management when needed.

- Strong analytical and mathematical skills.

- Resourceful mindset and multi-task oriented.

- Understanding of product testing and processes.

- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

- Proficient in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and learning other technical systems as needed.

- Strong natural interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

Physical and Safety Requirements:

- Subject to dust, noise, fragrances, and temperature variations.

- Sitting, bending, standing, walking, 8-10 hours per day.

- Able to frequently lift 25 lbs. and, occasionally, 50 lbs.

- Must comply with any safety or PPE requirements.

- Periodic exposure to production and mining environment.

- Some travel expected; valid driver’s license required.
