The Clay Center Public Utilities Commission is seeking a licensed Journeyman Electrician with a strong maintenance background to support electrical systems across utility, industrial, and municipal infrastructure. This position requires hands-on expertise in electrical maintenance, electric watthour metering, utility distribution equipment, and motor control systems. Substation experience is preferred; however, training will be provided for the right candidate. Participation in an on-call rotation is required. - Perform installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems in accordance with NEC, state, and local codes
- Maintain and service electric watthour metering systems, including troubleshooting metering and communication issues
- Work with utility distribution equipment, including distribution transformer connections, services, and related apparatus
- Perform electrical maintenance on motors, motor control centers (MCCs), and associated control circuits
- Install, troubleshoot, and maintain Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
- Read, interpret, and work from electrical schematics, one-lines, wiring diagrams, and control drawings
- Support PLC-controlled systems; perform basic diagnostics and interface with automation equipment
- Assist with substation maintenance, inspections, switching, and repairs (training provided if limited experience)
- Respond to after-hours call-outs as part of an on-call rotation
- Follow all safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, arc flash safety, and utility safety standards
- Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to work performed
- Current Journeyman Electrician license issued by the state
- Proven experience as a maintenance electrician
- Working knowledge of electric watthour metering systems
- Understanding of utility distribution transformer connections and secondary systems
- Experience with motor controls, starters, and control circuits
- Familiarity with VFD installation, programming, and troubleshooting
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Substation experience, including switching, maintenance, and inspections
- PLC experience, including basic programming, troubleshooting, or system interfacing
- Utility, municipal, or industrial electrical experience
- Ability to work in energized environments while following strict safety protocols
- Ability to lift, climb, and work in confined spaces as required
