We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Inventory Control Specialist to join our manufacturing operations team. This individual will be responsible for the receiving, inspection, storage, and management of raw materials including steel, aluminum, and 00stainless steel in various forms (sheets, rods, bars, extrusions). This role requires knowledge of raw materials and experience with inventory systems, particularly Epicor or similar MRP/ERP platforms (i.e. SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards). The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, is comfortable operating a forklift and crane, and can manage both physical and digital inventory with precision.
The Raw Materials Handler & Inventory Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring the accurate receiving, storage, issuing, and tracking of raw materials throughout the plant. This position works closely with Purchasing, Project Managers, and Production teams to maintain optimal inventory levels, improve material handling efficiency, and ensure materials meet required specifications. This role combines hands-on material handling with digital data entry and requires a strong understanding of metals and manufacturing processes.
- Receive and inspect incoming raw materials for accuracy and quality against spec sheets and packing slips
- Operate forklift and crane to unload, stage, and move oversized materials into designated storage areas
- Enter materials into Epicor MRP system and assign to correct storage location
- Issue materials to jobs in Epicor and deliver them to appropriate workstations on the production floor
- Review material requests with Purchasing and help prevent over-ordering through stock verification
- Assist with resolving supplier issues such as shipping errors, incorrect documentation, or damaged goods
- Perform weekly cycle counts and support annual physical inventory
- Mark materials with proper inventory codes using labeling equipment
- Maintain accurate digital records of material movements and storage
- Support efficient use of storage space and maintain a clean, organized material handling area
- Work with Project Managers to update job routers as needed
- Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying more efficient handling and storage methods
- Ensure compliance with internal control and inventory procedures
- Manage MRP cancel messages and adjust inventory as needed
- Track materials throughout the facility to maintain visibility and traceability
- Strong knowledge of raw materials (steel, aluminum, stainless) and their various forms
- Familiarity with material spec sheets, grades, and inspection techniques
- Ability to safely operate forklifts and cranes, and handle large or awkwardly shaped materials
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and material identification
- Proficient with inventory software (Epicor preferred) and Microsoft Excel
- Excellent problem-solving skills, especially when working with Purchasing and resolving receiving issues
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Physical ability to lift 50 lbs and maneuver materials safely
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Technical training or certification in material handling, logistics, or warehouse operations is a plus
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in raw materials handling, warehouse operations, or inventory management
- Experience with MRP/ERP systems (Epicor highly preferred)
- Prior experience working in a metal fabrication or manufacturing environment strongly preferred
- Crane and Forklift (must be certified or able to obtain certification)
- Pallet jacks and other material handling equipment
- Computer systems including Epicor MRP, Excel, and labeling equipment
- Basic measuring tools (tape measures, calipers, micrometers)
