The Heavy Wall Large Diameter Pipe Fitter is responsible for fitting, aligning, and preparing large-diameter, heavy-wall pipe for welding in an industrial manufacturing or fabrication environment. This role requires precision measurement, blueprint interpretation, and the ability to perform stick welding (SMAW) as needed to complete fit-up and weldments.
- Read and interpret blueprints, isometric drawings, and work orders
- Measure, mark, and align large-diameter heavy wall pipe for proper fit-up
- Perform pipe layout, bevel verification, and joint preparation
- Assemble pipe sections using clamps, wedges, dogs, chain falls, and other fitting tools
- Ensure proper root gap, alignment, and tolerances prior to welding
- Perform stick welding (SMAW) for tacking, securing fit-ups, and completing welds as required
- Operate cutting torches, grinders, and other hand tools
- Assist welders during fabrication and production processes
- Inspect materials for defects and ensure compliance with job specifications
- Maintain accurate measurements and quality standards throughout production
- Work closely with welders, operators, and supervisors to meet production goals
- Follow all safety procedures and wear required PPE
- Maintain clean and organized work areas- 2+ years of experience fitting heavy wall, large diameter pipe preferred, but willing to train the right person.
- Proficient in Stick Welding (SMAW)
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
- Strong knowledge of pipe fabrication and fit-up procedures
- Experience using measuring tools (tape measure, squares, levels, calipers)
- Knowledge of rigging and safe material handling practices
- Ability to work in a non-climate-controlled industrial environment
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy- Ability to lift 50+ pounds regularly
- Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, and standing
- Ability to work around heavy equipment and large steel materials
- Tolerance for heat, cold, and industrial noise environments
- Industrial pipe manufacturing or fabrication facility
- Exposure to heavy equipment, overhead cranes, welding operations, and steel materials
- Non-climate-controlled shop environment
