Responsible for oversight of all company retail facilities and supervision of all Station Managers. The Retail General Manager monitors day-to-day operations and is responsible for implementation of all activities required to achieve consistent store profitability and steady growth. The position reports to the General Manager and works closely with other members of the senior management team on projects that arise. The position requires regular travel to retail sites in southeast and south-central Alaska, as well as to the Yukon Territory in Canada.
- In coordination with station managers, guarantee that all retail site systems remain fully functional through application of a scheduled maintenance program. In the event of system failures, actively takes steps to diagnose / troubleshoot and make repairs quickly. Company retail fuel systems include point of sale systems, dispensers, UST tank monitoring systems, the Veeder-Root Panel, primary bankcard and third-party party credit card systems, and back-office software.
- In coordination with station managers, keep all sites current with credit card PCI compliance regulations.
- Work with regulatory agencies to maintain compliance including but not limited to Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), Alaska Tobacco Enforcement, Alaska Weights and Measures, State and Local Fire Marshalls, and ServSafe Compliance for food handling where applicable.
- Verifies all monthly regulatory compliance reports for UST’s are generated, filed, maintained, and made readily available in the event of an audit.
- To the extent possible, standardizes the inventory and merchandise sets among all sites. Ensure that sets are adjusted as needed to reflect merchandise seasonality along with changing industry trends. Regularly merchandise sets for promotions designed to increase sales and profit.
- Sets target margins by category for c-store inventory and manages and measures the impact of the pricing policy to ensure margin objectives are met. Monitors the retail price policy constantly.
- Provides upper management weekly reports containing relevant data on c-store sales and profit.
- Oversees month-end inventory counts and reconciliations. Must pay close attention to inventory shrinkage and verify that cigarette pack counts are done at all locations on every shift.
- Implements orientation program for new hires to include tobacco sales training. Also establishes the training calendar for all regular employees to include customer service training, safety and theft prevention training, and food worker training / certification where applicable.
- Works with c-store vendors to consolidate purchasing and ensure cost of goods is optimally low. Also works with freight forwarders to ensure rates are in line with prevailing market rates for LTL shipments.
- Is diligent about cleanliness of the sites and related aesthetics. Conducts overall appearance evaluations of the sites regularly when traveling to them and advises the store manager of any deficiencies detected that require attention.
- Works with upper management on additional tasks/projects as needed or assigned.
- Enforces all safety and security policies and corrects any unsafe conditions.
- Follows and enforces all company policies and established procedures.
- Education: High School Diploma. Bachelors degree is preferred.
- Experience: A minimum of four years’ retail management experience is preferred. Must have general knowledge of accounting procedures. Must have experience in working with point-of-sale systems.
- Other Qualifications: Must be able to work cooperatively with others and communicate in writing and verbally effectively with others. Must possess the desire to achieve higher standards for self and others. Should be a team player that is willing to also learn from the team. Setting high standards of performance for self and others; assuming responsibility and accountability for successfully completing assignments and tasks. Must be proficient in Microsoft office, excel and word. Must have or be able to obtain a passport.
- Attendance: Regular attendance is a requirement of this position. This position is “on-call” as needed.
- English Language: Must be able to read, write, and speak English.
