The Fabrication/Deburr Technician is responsible for supporting Steelhead Metal’s fabrication and finishing operations through high-quality deburring, material preparation, hardware installation, and powder-coating assistance. This role plays a key part in ensuring parts meet cosmetic and dimensional standards before moving to the next stage of production or shipment. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, reliable, and able to work efficiently in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Deburr, sand, and finish sheet-metal and machined components using hand tools, grinders, sanders, and automated equipment.
- Remove sharp edges, burrs, laser slag, machining marks, and weld discoloration as required.
- Inspect parts for cosmetic and dimensional accuracy; escalate issues to supervisors as needed.
- Perform surface preparation for powder coating, including cleaning, masking, and racking.
- Assist with material flow including unloading sheet metal, staging material for fabrication, and prepping parts for downstream operations.
- Operate basic shop equipment such as drill presses, sanders, saws, and hand tools.
- Read and interpret work travelers and simple technical drawings.
- Install PEM hardware, rivets, and other mechanical fasteners using presses and hand tools.
- Verify correct hardware type, orientation, and installation method.
- Ensure hardware meets pull-out and quality standards.
- Assist powder-coating team with part washing, racking, hanging, and masking.
- Move parts through wash systems, dry-off ovens, or staging areas as required.
- Support coating operators in maintaining workflow efficiency and quality.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area according to 5S expectations.
- Follow all safety policies, PPE requirements, and equipment-operation guidelines.
- Support cross-training and assist other departments as production demands require.
- Previous experience in metal deburring, fabrication, powder coating, or manufacturing preferred but not required.
- Ability to use tools such as grinders, orbital sanders, files, and deburring wheels.
- Understanding of basic measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, tape measures).
- Ability to read job routers, part numbers, and basic drawings.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.
- Fast-paced production manufacturing environment involving steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and coated parts.
