This position is based on site at the NWR Sturgeon Refinery working a 9/80 schedule.

Position Summary:
As part of the Process Engineering Services team, the Process Control & Automation Engineer is responsible for proactively identifying and supporting all process control issues within the assigned operating units. This role works closely with operations, maintenance and process engineers to support and address day-to-day operational requirements through change management and NWR work processes. This position works with instrumentation, electrical, projects, other discipline engineers, supply chain management, process safety, equipment vendors and the engineering contractors to ensure reliable operations of the plant.
Responsibilities:
- Successfully and proactively resolve process control issues and timely support for day-to-day process control automation issues in assigned areas;
- Designs process control strategies, control sequence and SIS logic;
- Creates and updates cause and effect diagrams, control narratives and safeguarding/interlock narratives and other process control and automation documentation;
- Ensures the adherence to the Management of Change (MOC) process for facility modifications involving process control and automation;
- Participates in HAZOP, SIL and other risk reviews from process control and automation perspectives;
- Participates/leads in incident investigations;
- Responsible for alarm management, process controller performance, continuous monitoring, improvement and KPI reporting in the assigned areas;
- Prepares KPI reports timely and accurately and maintains excellent functionality of process control systems;
- Keen focus on continuous improvement of automation systems;
- Prepares process control and automation scope for turnaround in the assigned areas and executes them effectively and timely for turnaround or short duration outages /opportunities;
- Provides design support and work packages for ongoing projects and plant changes;
- Provides technical support for units Refinery Centered Organization, in making operational decisions;
- Ensures cohesive working in the identification of improvement, PTO development, and technical scope development;
- Provides process engineering and unit operation support as needed;
- All other duties as assigned.
- Understands, creates and maintains a visible commitment to process and personal safety, as well as the safety of others; adheres to NWR’s Core Competencies to drive results and a high performing culture;
- Must hold a degree in either process control, chemical engineering, or electrical & instrumentation and be registered as a professional engineer (P.Eng) in Alberta;
- Minimum ten (10) years of experience in one or more areas of refinery, upgrader, or petrochemical units considered an asset;
- Must have a minimum of five (5) years of hands-on work experience in Delta-V process control systems in operating facility;
- Must be able to collaborate with other departments to effectively troubleshoot activities and execute assigned projects/work cohesively. Must be a team player;
- Willing to continuously and proactively collaborate, share, and seek information and guidance;
- Must be able to make decisions, in line with the refinery philosophy and execution plans;
- Ability to lead projects & collaborate with multiple stakeholders; indirectly lead and influence small teams;
- Possess effective, verbal, written and presentation skills;
- Working knowledge of Microsoft office is required;
- Must be well organized, a strategic thinker and planner;
- Must be willing and able to support refinery operations during off-duty hours and weekends during upsets, abnormal situations, and weekly coverage rotations.
