Job Summary

The Assay Supervisor oversees the day-to-day operations of the assay laboratory, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant analyses of ore, concentrate, and process samples. The role leads the laboratory team, prioritizing safety and quality, and optimizes performance for metallurgical accounting, grade control, and regulatory reporting.

Essential Functions

- Supervise all laboratory personnel, scheduling workloads, coaching team members, and conducting training for assay methodologies and safety practices.

- Coordinate laboratory workflow for sample preparation, analysis, data entry, and reporting.

- Oversee the use and maintenance of laboratory instruments, chemicals, and consumables, ensuring valid calibration and operation.

- Develops and implements statistical process control tools (e.g., control charts, trend analyses) to track assay performance, identify problem areas, and support metallurgical reconciliation and grade control decisions.

- Review analytical results and reports, ensuring accuracy, reliability, compliance, and timely distribution for mine planning and metallurgical accounting.

- Prepare and supervise the inventory of chemicals, reagents, lab supplies, and PPE; coordinate purchasing and procurement requests.

- Maintain clean, safe, and organized workspace; enforce safety standards for hazardous materials, waste management, ergonomics, and equipment use.

- Reviews, adapts, and develops analytical methods and workflows to keep the lab current with assay technology and industry best practices (fire assay, instrumental methods, sample preparation).

- Conducts regular performance reviews and provides input on promotion, development plans, and corrective actions where necessary.

- Collaborate with geologists, metallurgists, and process teams to support sampling, grade control, environmental monitoring, and production. Helps develop personnel in other departments to perform or understand key assay and QA/QC tasks.

- Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications And Skills

- College or technical training equivalent to 2 years of study; Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Metallurgy, Geology, or related scientific field preferred.

- 5-8 years of related work experience in an assay, analytical, or metallurgical laboratory environment (Previous mining industry experience strongly preferred).

- Experience in a supervisory or team leadership role; proven ability to direct, coach, and evaluate lab staff.

- Experience with QA/QC systems, laboratory safety, and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation processes.

- Knowledge of fire assay, wet chemistry, AAS, ICP, and XRF techniques.

- Strong grasp of laboratory instrumentation, calibration, troubleshooting, and sample preparation protocols.

- Good analytical and organizational skills with attention to accuracy and data integrity.

- Proficiency in laboratory information management systems (LIMS), MS Office, and reporting software.

- Ability to work effectively with others in a team environment.

- Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

- Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, adapt to change, and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment.

- Valid driver’s license and authorized to work in the US.

Salary Range: $100,000 - $115,000
