The Application Engineer at Switchgear Power Systems supports the design and validation of technical solutions that meet customer specifications and industry standards for switchgear systems. This role collaborates with cross-functional teams, including engineering, sales, and production, to develop accurate and manufacturable designs, resolve technical issues, and maintain compliance with organizational standards.
This position is intended to serve as a foundational role, providing opportunities to learn from Senior Application Engineers and develop into more specialized positions handling complex and custom projects.
- Attend charter and kickoff meetings alongside Project Managers and cross-functional teams
- Review customer documentation, including one-line diagrams and customer-specific requirements (CSR), to identify gaps or conflicts
- Assist in the creation of clarification documents summarizing discrepancies and seeking customer approvals before moving into detailed design
- Review and approve critical project documents, including component lists, one-line and three-line diagrams, control schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and data plates
- Ensure designs comply with relevant standards (NEC, ANSI, IEEE, UL) and customer-specific requirements
- Coordinate with Electrical and Mechanical Engineering teams to verify design feasibility and maintain design intent throughout the project lifecycle
- Assist in selecting primary and secondary components based on customer requirements and SPS standards
- Serve as the technical point of contact addressing design-related questions
- Participate in technical discussions and meetings to ensure design alignment and resolve standard technical questions
- Learn and communicate SPS design standards and processes internally and, as experience grows, externally to customers
- Mentor mechanical and electrical engineers aspiring to become application engineers, sharing practical knowledge and best practices
- Coach engineers to boost efficiency and quality through collaborative review and feedback
- Stay current with industry standards, codes, and SPS internal design practices to ensure continuous improvement and compliance
- Document lessons learned and contribute to updates of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions
- Proactively seek mentorship and training from Sr. Application Engineers and engineering leadership to prepare for more complex and custom projects
- Ability to read and understand schematic, one-line, and three-line diagrams
- Familiarity with front elevation and mechanical drawings
- Working knowledge of major OEM primary and secondary control components and their applications
- Ability to manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines with attention to detail
- Solid problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of engineering drawing guidelines and industry standards (e.g., IEEE, UL 891, UL 1558, NEC) –required to develop over time
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
- Good collaboration skills
- Initiative to learn and stay updated with innovations in the switchgear and manufacturing industries
Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering or a related engineering field is required. At least 2 years of electrical/mechanical engineering and CAD design (SolidWorks, SolidWorks Electrical, and AutoCAD) experience in switchgear or related industry is preferred.
