Summary/Objective
Under general supervision, performs entry-level work in the maintenance, fabrication, repair, overhaul of various structured equipment.
1. Maintains and repairs machinery and miscellaneous mechanical equipment at a variety of facilities.
2. Assists in the installation, repair and preventative maintenance of pumps, motors and other equipment utilized in the operation of large scale plant and station facilities associated with water utility services.
3. Operates or uses a variety of hand or power tools in maintain and repairing parts for equipment; makes parts and fixtures by cutting and shaping metals.
4. Performs carpentry and painting tasks; performs maintenance on building structures and equipment including HVAC systems; repairs doors and windows, replaces plumbing fixtures, and repairs desks, tables, and chairs.
5. May require the part time operation of some machinery but emphasis is upon servicing, repairing, and maintaining equipment.
6. Receives assignments in the form of oral or written work orders and may receive detailed instructions as to work methods in major repairs.
7. Performs under the supervision of the Chief Operator who inspects the work while in progress or upon completion.
8. Maintains records and tracks assets utilizing the asset management plan (AMP).
9. Proactively plans weekly work to increase efficiency and productivity while minimizing workload.
10. Submits maintenance reports as required on a weekly basis.
11. Works shift schedule and on-call and call-out duty, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
12. May operate water treatment facilities as required if licensed by TCEQ.
2. Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and maintenance used in mechanical maintenance and repair work.
3. Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to mechanical maintenance and repair work.
4. Skills in the proper use and care of tools and equipment necessary to perform various mechanical repair skills.
5. Skills to satisfactorily perform at least one of the following trades including but not limited to, complex mechanics, pipe fitting, insulation installer, welding, machining, electrical maintenance, electronics or control.
6. Skills in understanding and following oral and/or written instructions in English.
7. Ability to improve one’s personal skills, knowledge and initial abilities in order to meet or adapt to conditions.
9. Ability to perform detailed inspections of machinery and mechanical equipment and to detect flaws and defects in machinery while in operation.
10. Ability to use/operate various types of maintenance equipment with adequate competence.
11. Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions.
12. Ability to work in confined spaces and follow confined entry procedures.
13. Ability to work with or in the presence of various solvents, chemical and materials.
Must maintain good condition to do continuous physical work for minimum of eight hours under adverse weather conditions including, but not limited to sunshine, rain, sleet and 20 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit temperature extremes.
Physical Demands:

Must be able to walk up and down stairs as many as 25 times in a given day and carry up to 75 lbs. of tools and equipment. Must be able to walk, stand, climb ladders, bend at waist, bend at the knees, lift, pull, and push with up to 50 lbs. of force. Must exercise sufficient manual dexterity and good eye vision to safely operate maintenance tools. Must be able to stretch reach, overhead reach, and place the body in awkward positions to perform work. Must be able to work in elevated places. Must be able to pass annual hearing examinations and pulmonary function tests. Must be able to work in confined spaces and pass the annual respirator and/or Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) fit tests.
2. Three (3) years’ experience in mechanical or repair work
Requires a valid Texas Driver License and be insurable. Employee may be required to obtain a Texas Commercial Driver’s License Class B with Tank Endorsement and no restrictions within six (6) months of employment. Employee must also obtain a Texas Commission of Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Water Operator D license within one (1) year of employment.
