We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused Utility Locator to accurately identify, mark, and document underground utilities prior to excavation activities. This role is critical to damage prevention, jobsite safety, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with electromagnetic locating equipment, ground penetrating radar (GPR), and industry best practices for utility detection, verification, and documentation.
- Locate underground utilities including electric, gas, water, sewer, telecom, cable, and fiber optic lines using electromagnetic, GPR, acoustic, magnetic, and sonde locating equipment
- Apply locating signals using direct connection, induction, and clamp methods as appropriate
- Verify utility position and depth using multiple locating techniques and confirmation methods
- Mark utilities clearly and accurately using industry-standard color codes, paint, and flags
- Perform systematic site coverage to ensure 100% locate accuracy within the work area
- Document findings including depth readings, confidence levels, sketches, photos, and reports
- Communicate locate results, limitations, and safety concerns with clients, contractors, and utility owners
- Follow all safety procedures including PPE requirements, electrical safety practices, and excavation safety standards
- Respond appropriately to utility damage incidents and follow emergency response procedures
- Strong understanding of underground utility systems, materials, and installation methods
- Proficiency with electromagnetic locators, transmitters, receivers, GPR systems, acoustic locators, and magnetic locators
- Knowledge of electromagnetic theory, signal propagation, and interference mitigation
- Familiarity with APWA color codes, one-call (811) procedures, and damage prevention laws
- Ability to interpret as-built drawings, maps, and historical utility records
- Strong attention to detail, documentation accuracy, and quality control practices
- Effective communication skills for working with crews, clients, and utility owners
- Adherence to OSHA excavation and electrical safety standards
- Knowledge of grounding, bonding, and energized utility precautions
- Awareness of traffic control, confined space hazards, and environmental conditions
- Commitment to near-miss reporting, continuous improvement, and jobsite safety
- Previous experience in utility locating, damage prevention, or underground utility work preferred
- Industry training or certification (NULCA, CGA Best Practices, or equivalent) preferred
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites as required
