Utility Construction Operator

Position Summary

The Utility Construction Operator performs physically demanding outdoor work, supports jobsite operations, assists with equipment and installation tasks, and helps maintain safe, productive work environments. This role requires operating heavy equipment, supporting utility installation, following safety protocols, and contributing to overall project success under the guidance of experienced Operators, Foremen, and Supervisors.

Key Responsibilities

Field Operations & Labor

- Perform physically demanding manual labor outdoors in all weather conditions, including digging, trenching, utility installation, ground inspections, material handling, and traffic control.

- Assist crews with jobsite setup/teardown: loading and unloading trucks, staging equipment, setting cones/signage, and capturing jobsite photos.

- Maintain clean, organized work areas and ensure equipment is properly prepared and stored.

Equipment Operation

- Independently operate one or more types of heavy equipment (directional drills, mini-excavators, hydro equipment, locators) with minimal oversight.

- Support installation processes by safely operating equipment aligned with PIR standards and project requirements.

Production & Quality

- Meet or exceed production goals set by Foremen or management.

- Demonstrate initiative during training with senior team members, staying engaged and proactively learning equipment, installation processes, and field techniques.

- Read and interpret prints, construction drawings, and project documentation.

- Assist with daily redlines and production reporting.

Utility Locating & Safety

- Under supervision, perform basic utility locating.

- Display entry-level knowledge of the 811 locate process, including identification of conflicts, troubleshooting, and appropriate decision-making.

- Follow PIR procedures for utility identification, safety, and damage prevention.

- Uphold PIR’s zero-incident safety culture by participating in pre-task planning, safety assessments, and good-catch reporting.

- Lead by example by wearing approved PPE and following all safety standards at all times.

Teamwork & Training

- Collaborate effectively with diverse crews and support high-volume project demands.

- Provide training and support to entry-level laborers while reinforcing PIR’s safety and operational expectations.

Work Environment

- Work requires standing, walking, climbing, squatting, kneeling, and lifting throughout the shift.

- Exposure to outdoor elements, varying weather, and elevated noise levels is expected.

- This is a safety-sensitive position requiring standard PPE: safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, hard hats, and steel-toed boots.

Experience & Education

- Minimum 1 year of utility construction experience required.At least 6 months of experience operating Drill, Hydro, Mini Excavator, or Bucket Truck.

- Valid driver’s license preferred; ability to drive a company vehicle required.

- Class A CDL strongly preferred; increases pay.

- High school diploma or equivalent required.

Pay: $25.00 - $28.00 per hour
