The Upfit Technician is responsible for installing, modifying, and customizing equipment and accessories on vehicles to meet customer specifications and industry standards. This role involves working with a variety of vehicle types, including commercial, emergency, and specialty vehicles. The Upfit Technician will ensure all installations are completed accurately, safely, and efficiently, adhering to company policies and quality standards.
- Perform installations of aftermarket equipment such as service bodies, lighting, shelving, racks, GPS units, and other accessories on vehicles.
- Modify vehicles to meet specific customer requirements, including electrical wiring, mounting equipment, and structural adjustments.
- Install and configure specialized systems such as sirens, cameras, and communication devices.
- Conduct thorough inspections of completed installations to ensure quality and adherence to specifications.
- Test installed systems and equipment to verify proper operation and troubleshoot any issues.
- Document completed work and report any deviations or required adjustments.
- Safely operate hand and power tools required for upfitting tasks.
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment to ensure they are in good working condition.
- Follow all safety protocols and ensure compliance with OSHA standards and company safety policies.
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace, and handle tools and equipment properly to prevent accidents or damage.
- Ensure that all upfitting activities comply with industry regulations and customer requirements.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for specific tasks.
- Provide technical assistance and guidance to other team members or departments as needed.
- Collaborate with engineering and design teams to resolve technical issues or implement new upfit solutions.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends, new products, and technical advancements.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and time spent on each project.
- Communicate with supervisors and project managers about job progress, potential delays, or additional resources needed.
- Assist in inventory management by reporting used parts and supplies.
- High school diploma or GED required; technical certification or associate degree in automotive technology, electronics, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in vehicle upfitting, automotive installation, or a related technical field.
- Experience with electrical systems, welding, and mechanical installations is highly desirable.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools, as well as diagnostic equipment.
- Strong understanding of vehicle electrical systems and wiring diagrams.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical instructions.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to lift and move heavy equipment (up to 75 lbs.) and work in physically demanding conditions.
- Ability to work in various positions, including standing, kneeling, and bending, for extended periods.
- Comfortable working in both indoor and outdoor environments, as required by project needs.
- A willingness to work extended hours as needed to meet project deadlines.
- Work primarily in a workshop or garage setting, with occasional outdoor work.
