Observes and assists in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and modification of Pepco’s fiber optic communications networks.
Assists higher classified employees with the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and modification of Pepco’s fiber optic communications networks.
Assists higher classified employees working with other departments and contractors engaged in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and modification of Pepco’s fiber optic communications networks.
Assists higher classified employees investigating reports of trouble on communications equipment in power plants, substations, vehicles or field locations. Inspects and locates malfunctioning components, makes necessary adjustments or repairs.
Assists higher classified employees inspecting and calibrating various special Company electronic/communications test equipment such as: OTDR, light meters and transmitters, fiber identifiers and other associated equipment used to maintain, upgrade and troubleshoot the fiber optic networks.
Assists and performs special field, shop or laboratory tests as assigned.
Assist higher classified employees making annual inspections of fiber optic network test and splice equipment to include OTDR, Fusion splice equipment and other test equipment.
Attends training classes and studies technical manuals, drives Company vehicles and operates all Company radio and communications equipment.
Assembles, loads, unloads, carries, places in position and distributes test equipment, tools and materials to higher classified employees, as needed. Operates test apparatus and related instruments as directed.
Cleans, lubricates and maintains test equipment, tools and other shop stock. Maintain good housekeeping in work areas and ensures shop/field/truck stock supplies are kept at adequate levels.
Sets up barricades and performs other related general housekeeping functions necessary to maintain safe work areas.
Fiber Optic Technician, Electronic Technician, or experience in the electrical field
Possess general knowledge of electric and electronic principles as related to Company communications and associated protective control systems.
Ability to learn work methods and follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to use various test equipment, instruments, hand tools, etc.
Possess working knowledge of applicable Company safety regulations and general First-Aid methods.
Possess a valid state issued motor vehicle operators permit.
Obtain valid FCC 2nd Class General Radio Operators License (GROL)
Work requires continuous physical activity, sometimes of a strenuous nature. Some shift work and overtime required.
Activity – climbing ladders, pulling, or pushing and lifting up to 75 lbs., driving, sitting, squatting, bending, twisting, or kneeling, standing, walking.
Works on energized equipment in dirty, noisy, dimly lit areas, ranging from very hot to very cold temperatures. Hands and arms used simultaneously accompanied by a high degree of manual dexterity. Possess good hearing and vision.
