Are you ready to take your engineering career to the next level at a world-class mining facility? We’re seeking a motivated and innovative Tailings Engineer to join our Horizon Tailings Engineering team!
In this dynamic role, you’ll play a key part in shaping the future of sustainable tailings management. Reporting to the Tailings Lead, you’ll contribute to the evaluation, development, and execution of tailings plans while ensuring regulatory and operational compliance. You’ll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across Canadian Natural, including Tailings Operations, Process Engineering, Mine Maintenance and Mining Technical Services to drive technical excellence and operational efficiency.

•Job location: Calgary, Alberta (with possible future assignments to Horizon Oil Sands north of Fort McMurray, Alberta)
•Shift schedule: 5x2, Monday-Friday

Key Accountabilities:
•Identify, plan and execute tailings projects aligned with 3-month, 18-month and long‑range tailings plans to support safe, reliable and cost-effective operations
•Collaborate cross-functionally with teams including Tailings Operations, Tailings Sustaining Capital, Bitumen Production, Mine Planning, Mine Operations, Mine Maintenance and Geotech/Geology to ensure plan integration and optimization
•Apply engineering principles and experience with relevant mine planning software in the development of tailings plans, reports, budgets, and forecasts
•Maintain, update and validate the tailings mass balance model to ensure accurate volume tracking, deposition forecasting, and compliance with tailings regulations
•Support tailings deposition, water management and reclamation modelling, including consolidation and seepage analysis
•Provide technical support and planning coverage for the tailings pond investigation drill programs
What You Bring to the Role:
•Bachelor’s degree in Mining, Geological, Geotechnical or Civil Engineering
•Registration or eligibility for registration with APEGA is required
•All levels of experience will be considered, with preference given to candidates with knowledge of oil sands tailings operations, tailings planning, project design, project budgeting and cost analyses
•Experience with tailings planning software preferred; Hexagon MineSight or Maptek Vulcan, Minebridge Muk3D
•Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel
•Strong interpersonal and communication skills
