Field Piping Engineer – Long Lake (Relocation to Ft. McMurray, AB)

Position Overview:
The Field Piping Engineer will be based on site at Long Lake Operations and will be part of the site engineering and technical support team. This position plays a key role in field-level engineering oversight of piping design, installation, stress analysis, inspection, and construction coordination. The successful candidate will support both operations and ongoing construction activities in SAGD and/or upgrader process areas, and will report to the Senior Manager – Production & Process Engineering.
Key Responsibilities:
•Conduct piping stress analysis using Caesar II for aboveground and underground pipelines.
•Perform code-compliant stress assessments based on ASME B31.1, B31.3, B31.4 and CSA Z662.
•Evaluate nozzle loads on static equipment, ensuring equipment-piping interfaces comply with mechanical limits.
•Identify and resolve stress-related issues on pipelines and process piping in high-pressure systems (e.g., steam lines, emulsion lines, produced gas, natural gas).
•Provide technical direction to piping stress analysis team as required, and review vendor documentation for piping components and materials.
•Responsible for producing piping layouts, Plant Plot Plans, and contributing to Overall Plot Plans.
•Participate in field walkdowns and site inspections to verify as-built conditions and support construction teams.
•Support piping material selection, wall thickness calculations, hydrotest planning, and design for cold climate/winterization.
•Prepare and review Mechanical Design Datasheets (MSDs) based on process conditions.
•Assist with the preparation of piping-related documents such as Line Designation Tables (LDTs), P&IDs, and isometrics.
•Participate in multidiscipline design reviews and ensure piping design complies with company and client standards.
•Provide field-level support during fabrication, installation, tie-ins, and commissioning.
•Review Material Requisitions (MRs), perform Technical Bid Evaluations (TBEs), and liaise with procurement teams to ensure quality and compliance.
•Collaborate with mechanical and process engineers to ensure piping integration within plant systems.
•Ensure all piping documentation is in compliance and, if registered, authenticate piping drawings/documents as a Professional Engineer.
Qualifications:
•Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Piping Engineering (or related discipline).
•Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with APEGA, and authorized to authenticate engineering documents in Alberta.
•10–15+ years of engineering experience, including field engineering; prior work in oil sands SAGD, upgrader, or oil & gas facilities preferred.
•Proven expertise in piping stress analysis, piping material selection, and detailed design of piping systems.
•Familiarity with pipe supports selection/design, and working knowledge of piping fabrication and installation practices.
•Strong knowledge of industry codes and standards, including ASME and CSA piping codes.
•Proficient in engineering tools such as Caesar II, AutoCAD, SmartPlant, Navisworks, and MS Office.
•Strong analytical skills and problem-solving mindset, able to work independently in a site-based environment.
•Excellent communication and documentation skills; able to coordinate across disciplines effectively.
•Valid Class 5 driver’s license and legally eligible to work in Canada.
